The "Can't believe they lost from there" Thread

A great thread for NZ fans. Let's start with the big guns:

Full Scorecard of New Zealand vs England 2nd Test 2008 - Score Report | ESPNcricinfo.com

NZ bat first and thanks to a magnificent hundred by Ross Taylor and a fighting 50 from Kyle Mills, score 381. Daniel Vettori and Iain O'Brien then go to work on a rapidly drying pitch and proceed to reduce England to 8/179 with the real prospect of enforcing the follow on. Stuart Broad slogs some arsey runs and gets England to 200, but the lead is surely decisive on a pitch where even Vettori is extracting turn and England have to bat last. NZ build a wobbly but credible start, reaching 85/2 when all hell breaks loose. Monty starts getting the ball to turn square and NZ's batsmen - clearly shaken up - crumble like a house of cards. 85/2 becomes 114 all out in the span of 17 overs. Still, England's target is imposing: 294 on a surface where the spinners have taken 11/103 in the previous 2 innings. But Vettori finds precisely none of the turn that was so prevalent over the prior 2 days, and England end up strolling home only 4 down (one of them a run out).
This is basically Vettori's test bowling career summarised in one match

This thread should basically be one in every two Punjab Kings matches. KL and Mayank usually give them great starts and they somehow manage to keep ****ing it up.

Lol easy one for me. WI in NZ don't remember the year but openers put on 270 then we fold for 300 odd and got absolutely smoked by NZ.

The Harbhajan test...

Any time I ever feel sorry for India overseas, I remember that game and smile at whatever pain they're currently suffering.

The worst part is one of the most unlikely NZ sides of all time could have run away with a 1-0 series victory in india if they close out that game then avoid collapsing to ishant sharma in the 3rd test.

1996 WI vs AUs WC semifinal is the most inexplicable collapse in a big ODI tournament by a distance. WI were 165-2 in 41 overs chasing 207. Should've walked it home, but totally lost their heads sending in pinch hitters and swinging wildly at everything.

And not a loss, but this random sharjah SL vs Pak match was quite similar but even worse. SL needed 23 in 10 overs with 8 wickets left and somehow managed to only tie the game . Reckon if you had one of those win percentage trackers back then, SL would be at 99.9999999% or something. Razzaq bowled an epic spell and Malik had a great runout on SL's attempted single with the scores tied. Highlights are pretty great, they used to show it every few months on Ten sports on cricket classics:

This SL-Aus game was hilarious too. 120-8 chasing 240 and somehow SL won . Australia's scars from Ishant-VVS at Mohali were fresh because this was barely a couple of weeks later. The reason I remember it that well is because by some spooky coincidence Steve Smith found himself in the same situation here, with the batsmen stranded in the middle of the pitch and a chance of a runout. Unlike there he hit the stumps. Aus still lost tho lolololol

There was a game in Singapore or Sharjah where SL needed like a 100 odd to beat Pak, Jayasuriya got the fastest ODI 50 at that point, Kalu made a 13 ball 0 in partnership with Jaya. Somehow Jaya went and then they lost.

India vs Pakistan T20 WC 2007 group stage match had "how?" moments from both teams. India were practically certain to win before Misbah turned into a god, he then promptly **** the bed failing to get a single in either of the last two balls.

ATG tie-breaker too.

Haha I feel like we almost didn't make that last single and were close to choking ourselves. I guess that was peak Matthews and Malinga isn't too bad with the bat so it's not an outrageous win.

I think there was a time in the 90s when our whole game depended on what Sanath did or didn't do.

Single handedly spoiled Venky Prasad's otherwise acceptable career, IMO. :p
Yeah, he did seem to take a liking to his bowling. Maybe it was just the ideal pace and length for him to thrive. On his day he'd probably take on any bowler though.

I feel as if the 2015 game at Lord's was just as bad. 403-3 replying to England's 389, only to end up losing by 124 runs. That was woeful.

Nz were unlikely to win with over 20 runs to get in the last over with only 3 wickets in hand then Mark Richardson carved Shane Warne for 3 sixes to get in to a position from which they looked certain to win. Warnie worked up his magic afterwards bowling Richardson around his legs, Vettori caught and then Tuffey running himself out from the last ball. Incredible stuff

Sorry if already mentioned but the 2nd Test in the recently abandoned England/India series is worth throwing in the ring.
