RigorMortis announces retirement
Hot on the heels of Nathan Patrick's shock depature from CWLand, comes the far less shocking news of the retirement of chinaman spinner Rex Harris. Harris, who played one first-class match for CW Blue in Season 8, has cited personal and economic reasons for his premature departure from cricket.
"Sadly, I simply don't have the time to keep an eye on the game any more," Harris explained to a media circus consisting of his parents and pet budgie. "I'm also very disappointed that I was unable to make any impact on the Blue side in the past season. Ultimately, I felt that I would not be able to contribute sufficiently in the coming seasons to do either myself or the CW Blue team justice, and have decided to retire now rather than put in mediocre performances."
Commenting on Patrick's recent decision to concentrate on his religious studies, Harris wished him all the best but pointed out that "many top-level cricketers have very strong religious beliefs and that hasn't gotten in the way of their cricket. I hope Nath can find his way back to CWLand and contribute both on and off the field."
When asked if he would consider returning to the game, Harris said nothing was certain in life, but that he sincerely doubted that he would roll his arm over in competition again. "The pressures of my new job would preclude me from additional training, etc., that would be necessary to become a regular member of any CW team."
Harris hit out at suggestions that the surprisingly able batch of rookies in Season 8 had contributed to his demise, but noted that "it certainly didn't help. Had I known the standard of rookies coming through, I would have put in far more training before signing up to CricketWeb."
There was a moment of controversy however, when Rex was asked if he would miss the camaraderie within the system. Harris admitted, "Unfortunately no. Like most cricket clubs, there are always cliques that form, and unless you manage to find your way into one, you are very much left to your own devices. It does appear that a certain few senior players, no more than a handful, have no desire to help younger players, or at least are very choosy in who they give assistance to." Harris later confirmed that he was not referring to any players from CW Blue, but would not comment on who he was alluding to.
Harris concluded his press "conference" by thanking Liam Camps for giving him an opportunity to participate in the CW Development League, and all his CW Blue team-mates for Season 8.
