Stokes came in when they had only 71 runs scored before the 20th over finished and then also lost his partner 4 overs later at 86 runs. Dhoni walked in the 22nd over with 40 more runs and his partner sticked around till the last 10 overs

this does boost the merit of Stokes’ knock honestly

Yeah true. On reflection, I think Stokes' is better than Dhoni since England were definitely going to lose without him and he had to shepherd the tail. Pressure level was same with Dhoni.

Dhoni had plenty of batting to spare.

I feel Lloyd has a much better case now, with Gilly and Aravinda behind. Lloyd faced the best attack any of them did(although Aravinda is close)peak Lilee and Thomson with Gilmour on top, came in a very bad situation, was burdened with captaincy also, was the main aggressor throughout the innings. Plus the first WC final.

like i said the one thing holding it back is that Stokes did not look comfortable for most parts of the innings. he just survived with sheer grit and was also lucky in certain parts. Dhoni’s was far more ice cold and looked like he wasn’t ever going to lose his wicket

Plus scored at a rate well ahead of his time.

I think that is more due to the sluggish pitch where medium pacers were hard to get away. Dhoni was playing on a belter.

Would go with Gilly.
In Gilly's defense, his was easily the most one man batting show in any WC final. He was in poor form that tournament and his level of destruction was simply unheard of. He left Hayden behind and simply gave SL no chance. Murali and Malinga were in excellent form that tournament and both were neutralized. Awesome hitting.

The only thing that has Lloyd ahead maybe is the attack he faced was even better, his knock was also ahead of his time and he came in at a very tough time and that he was Captain as well.

Dhoni’s was better from a story perspective but in truth India still had potm Yuvraj and also Raina still left both of whom chased down Australia’s target in quarters. pressure wasn’t as high as you’d believe
I think you may be right from the angle of optics, Dhonis innings was immense. I recall watching that final six thinking I had seen one of the greatest captain knocks of all-time. Now it doesn't even get a vote.

the narrative surrounding that team and Dhoni himself was quite the thing, almost magical and brought in a huge new fanbase of India into cricket

Would put the innings into tiers:

Lloyd and Gilly - one man destruction

DeSilva, Stokes and Dhoni - Chasing knocks

Viv and Ponting - First innings ballast

Posters would rate them based on what they give more value to.
