Barrington v Trueman - sudden death

Ok, time is upon us & the voting is tied at 8-8. To avoid any controversy the votes have been cast as follows:

Barrington: Matteh, Perm, Sanz, a massive zebra, JBH001, steds, grecian, superkingdave

Trueman: Goughy, marc71178, aussie, oz_fan, GeraintIsMyHero, honestbharani, Jungle Jumbo, Bob Bamber

Next vote in the next hour (from someone who hasn't voted) will win it; if no-one votes I'll cast mine to decide....

BB, you never did answer my question from an earlier post. Is the photo of Fred from his fat end of career spell at Derbyshire? If it is, could you not have found a picture of him in his prime?

PS my wife votes for Trueman, does that count? :D

I honestly don't know. Blame Google images! I actually doubt it tho, 'cos here's one of Fred looking distinctly plump which is presumably from later on:

Vimesy carries the day for Frederick Sewards & he marches on into the second round 9-8.

Next up, two tykes who seem have little in common save 58 tests apiece & their county of origin.

Battle of the Englishmen: Round1, Battle 10

Darren Gough
58 tests, 855 runs @ 12.57 (2 half-centuries), 229 wickets @ 28.39 (5 wicket innings: 9)
157 ODIs (as of 18/8/06), 590 runs @ 12.55, SR 63.50, 235 wickets @ 26.11, ER 4.38 (4 wicket matches: 10, 5 wicket matches: 2)

vs

Wifred Rhodes
58 tests, 2325 runs @ 30.19 (2 centuries, 11 half-centuries), 127 wickets @ 26.96 (5 wicket innings: 6, 10 wicket matches: 1)

Rhodes by a couple of universes.

Bowling averages

Tests 58 8225 3425 127 8/68 15/124 26.96 2.49 64.76 6 6 1
First-class 1110 185799 70322 4204 9/24 16.72 2.27 44.19 287 68

We are talking about the man who took more First-class wickets then anyone else, also nearly scoring 40,000 runs as well.

Against that podgy, poncey dancer from Barnsley.

Sometimes it's about more than just the stats.
Which is really an excuse for the "I couldn't give a **** about the history of the game and only interested in players I have seen first hand" attitude. Rhodes was in a completely different league not only as a batsman and bowler, but also as a personality. Indeed, the image of the archytypical Yorkshireman was to no small extent based on Rhodes.
