The Battle of the Commentators

cpr

International Coach
Tight one this. Whilst Nicholas is a solid commentator, he's not spectacular, and sometimes i feel as if he's dictating the commentary, not the action. Netherless, he's possibly one of the best at linking a whole commentary team together, bringing in the co commentators expertise almost naturally (listening to sky sometimes, it seems kinda laboured when they want to make points, Nicholas makes it seem so natural)

However, Bumbles always a joy to listen to. He's informative, he knows his game, like Nicholas he's a commentary box natural. What swings it in his favour for me (besides being a Lancs man) is during a long day his art of keeping people interested is essential. Yes he does divert away from the action in the middle, but never at the detriment to the game, and sometimes it doesnt hurt having a bit of humour about

So for Lloyd (toughie though)

I actually rather like Nicholas. He probably overdoes the enthusiastic vicar thing a bit "Oh, he's, so, so good" but he does know his stuff. Think a lot of the crap he gets is because he's a pudding-soft target: English, southern, public-school, home-counties, etc.

Bumble is overrated a bit I think, but underneath the halfwit northerner schtick he's actually very insightful, as I suppose someone who has done pretty much everything in top-level cricket (player, captain, county coach, national coach, umpire) should be. So for: Lloyd.

Following a plethora of negative voting; mostly for Mark Nicholas, David Lloyd triumphs 11 - 1 and Mark Nicholas takes a fall in the first round.

Battle Six

In what looks on paper to be the biggest mismatch of the round, can the unfancied beat the impeccible pedigree of the favourite?

Waqar Younis vs Richie Benaud

Waqar Younis

Playing Career: At his peak, a devastatingly fast bowler for Pakistan with the ability to achieve late swing on full deliveries causing problems for many batsmen. Held the captaincy position for Pakistan for a while, resigning after failure at the 2003 World Cup.
Commentating Pedigree: Recently took up a position commentating for Channel Nine in Australia to add to his commentating commitments back home which he has held since his playing retirement in 2004.
Other: * The only player to pass the 1,000 runs scored mark without hitting at least one fifty.
* Served as bowling coach for Pakistan from March 2006 to January 2007.

Richie Benaud

Playing Career: Took Australia to the top of the cricket ladder, captaining the team from 1959 and playing in a total of 63 tests prior to retiring in 1964. A useful batsman, but primarily a leg-spin bowler.
Commentating Pedigree: Took a course in becoming a BBC presenter after the Ashes tour of 1956, but finally moved into commentary after retiring from his playing career. Has commentated ever since. In the UK, he commentated for the BBC and then Channel 4 until the coverage was taken by Sky in 2006. He has continued to commentate for Channel Nine in Australia after this time.
Other: * Once worked for The Sun newspaper
* Inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2007
* Appeared in adverts for the Australian Tourist Board, stating various Australian locations to be "Marvellous!"

This is Stalybridge Celtic getting ManUre in the third round of the FA Cup. Actually, not sure that analogy holds too much water as people don't generally despise Benaud, nor is he that big in SE Asia.

Anyway, tempting as it is to vote against Waqar, has to be Sir Richie Benaud, doesn't it?

benaud surely waqar will not get one. however he probably wont get any negatives either. someone who was been commentating before i was born against someone doing it for three years? this bout is finished already
