The ATG World XI's game

Batting votes
Paynter- fantastic batsman and fielder, enormous average, capable of making huge scores, superb in a crisis.
de Villiers- immense talent, can score alarmingly quickly and is one of the best fielders to grace the field.
Vijay Hazare- vastly underrated, scored his runs tough.

Bowling vote
Lock- threw the ball very, very well. Huge toss up between him and Trumble, but I like the left-arm factor.

Some will say that Yousuf and Jayawardene weren't that good in grassy and bouncy conditions. I'll tell them that's the reason I didn't vote for those 2 for the D or E team tbh.

I researched Qadir a little, turns out his away average was around 46-47, whereas he bowled at around 26-27 at home. Brings him down a fair bit in my eyes.

I'm not that fussed about Averages with Wrist Spinners because they do have the natural tendency to be hit for 4 but then remove the off-stump the very next ball. However, Strike Rates of over 100 in Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies is very disappointing.

But on the other hand, watching Qadir bowl was pretty memorising as I recall because of his sheer variety. Indeed, Qadir is a bit like the Indian bowler Chandra. Logically you'd pick Prassana or Bedi in your team, but Chandra had that 'X-factor' whereby he had the ability to make world-class players look ordinary when he was 'on-song'.

I like both Qadir and Chandra for their unpredictability. Crap one day, devastating the next. It's just a shame that they didn't produce the goods more often.

Agreed with all spinners, in fact. Averages often have to do with the conditions they bowl in over their career, etc., and I do my best to avoid relying on statistics completely. Qadir's are very much worse though, so I obviously took note. I do also note that some of his performances have been so brilliant that people have rated him even above Warne, for that matter. His 9/56 in Lahore is rated as one of the best performances by a spinner ever, and he was useful with the bat too.

That would be an excuse for a high economy rate though, not a high average.

I think what Monk was saying was that spinners have the tendency to go for runs but also suddenly produce unplayable deliveries, not the more literal interpretation.

I'm a fan of AB's, but I didn't expect him to go this early.

Waite- fantastic wicketkeeper who could bat more than capably.
Jackson- fantastic batsman who proved himself in very harsh conditions. Geniune fifth bowling option too.
