The ATG World XI's game

NUFAN

An exciting round really with so many different cricketers fighting it out for a position in the World F XI, particularly for the batsman. Kumar Sangakkara was quite unanimous getting 12 votes from the 16 voters. Kumar Ranjitsinhji finished second with 5 votes - just out of curiosity, does anyone know what style of bowler Ranji was? In third place it was a tie, but since one of my players tied, he misses out which is unlucky for Crowe. Charlie Macartney makes the team.

The bowlers ended up being a race between 3. I thought that Bedser might make this, but it ended up being Walsh and Larwood who both received 9 votes. I guess Larwood's batting helps the team too.

11. Courtney Walsh

This team, I'm definitely going to ask for the batting lineup as it's tricky.

I'm thinking this round it might be best to just pick the 2 best players to finish off the team. The reason being is someone might pick a player at 7, while more people pick him at 6. I think we should count all of the votes for that cricketer.

I'm not going to bother with a suggested players list this time, but I guess we have to keep in mind that the team currently has just the 3 genuine bowlers and two part time spinners in Simpson and Macartney and a few lobs from Ranji, lol (thanks Prince).

1) Select two available players who will help this team the most

International Debutant
Clive Lloyd and Kapil Dev. I don't believe he has been selected... Am I correct?
This will give us a captain, fantastic batting depth and a quality seamer.

International Coach
Clive Lloyd
Ian Bishop

Need that second agressive bolwer in Bishop (brilliant before injury) and Lloyd brings a great batsman, slip and captain to the team. Would manage Larwood better than Jaradine.

I'm happy enough with Lloyd's inclusion on the strength of his batting and fielding, but I don't think we really need his captaincy with Bob Simpson a solid option.

It is difficult this round, because is Tallon, Verity, Larwood good enough for 7,8,9 or are they better at 8,9,10..

Mark Waugh
Unbelievable fielder, brings pace and spin options into the side, and had the ability to raise his game against the best players at important times, as shown by his hundreds against the Windies and South Africa.

Kapil Dev
Suited to batting at 7, brings a lot to the table with the ball and a great athlete.

EDIT: I think it has to be Tallon at 8. Was thinking about including Barlow over Waugh but he really opened the batting most of the time. Just wanted another batting all-rounder. I'm open to suggestions if someone can come up with an option I like better.

I'm not going to argue with anyone who picks Mark Waugh. But there are certainly better bowling options for cricketers who are considered batting all rounders.

I guess you could consider:
Aubrey Faulkner, Tony Greig, Vinoo Mankad, Ted Dexter, Brian McMillan, Warwick Armstrong, Mushaq Mohammad, Jack Gregory, Frank Woolley, Trevor Goddard, Shakib Al Hasan or JR Reid, maybe?

Yup, but I'm uncomfortable with many of them batting at 6 in this team.

EDIT: Dexter maybe the one that I'd consider bringing in.

Is Dev really good enough to be the 3rd seamer. I dont think so, better off as the 5th option.

I was expecting Dev and someone like Faulkner to get through this round. That's a good 4th and 5th bowling option and the batting is good when you consider 8,9,10 all average in the 15-20 region.

With Dev, I guess you have to consider whether or not you value his brilliance at home more than his solid, but not spectactular away record.

Bat Tallon at 7 and I will have no complaints. Solid first class record, his test performances were restricted through illness. If he'd had more opportunity, he would have surely scored two or three big ones.

It is a bit of a myth that Tallon couldn't bat. I'm sure he could bat at 7 in a decent Test side. But we're picking more than decent here, and the fact that Kapil Dev could be a matchwinning batsman is what really separates him from the competition at this stage.

Plenty of good candidates for another batsman, but will put in a mention for the perennially underrated Maurice Leyland.
