All AT XIs?
Who in their right mind would put James Anderson in the West Indies all time eleven?
The third choice seamer for each all time XI would be:

Garner
Waqar
Lindwall
Pollock
Southee
Zaheer/Srinath
Not Vaas

Anderson is roughly Southee level and way better than the ones below him but equally not a patch on the top half.

If Shane Bond's body wasn't made of glass, Anderson definitely wouldn't make the NZ team either.

Hadlee is obviously one new ball bowler, Cairns bowls 1st change, and Wagner 2nd change. Vettori is the spinner.

Cowie, Bond, Southee, or Anderson? Tough one.
If Jamieson opens the bowling in years to come (did it 3 times this year), Anderson also looks less likely.

Anderson only makes teams if he has the new ball. Would be a terrible 3rd seamer.
NZ's all time attack is probably Hadlee, Bond, Cairns, Wagner, Vettori.

Like I said in a 5 man attack it would be Cairns. Anderson is a better bowler but obviously an inferior cricketer.

Picking Wagner gives you a left armer, bounce bowler, workhorse, and a bloke who takes wickets on roads with the old ball all in one. Attacks need variety. And done at a (slightly) better average and strike rate than Jimmy. Hadlee is a better faster version of Anderson and Cairns is a worse version. Bond gives 150 km/h swinging yorkers and Wagner variety (as explained above).

I think you may be a bit harsh on Anderson. Putting him behind Wagner, even as a change bowler, is a big call.
can sort of see it justified if you're going for the "third bowler on your atg team should be an atg change bowler", but if you're doing "you pick the 3 top pacers regardless of if they'd ""compliment"" each other" then i can't justify it, but that's just my $20

I think most posters just pick the best 3 bowlers for these kind of teams.

I've been trying to construct teams that would actually take the field and try to factor in who would be an ideal change bowler and which opening bowlers would possibly be effective bowling uphill or into the wind.

Regardless, Jimmy Anderson as a change bowler would be marginally less effective at worst. The **** comes back for second spells and does a great job quite often, and in the Test that just finished he bowled perfectly all innings and actually took basically all of his wickets with the old ball.

It's galaxy brain stuff to pick a worse bowler as a "change specialist" just because. And no hate on Neil Wagner but come on, in an ATG scenario what are we even doing talking about this guy.

I obviously haven't seen as much of him as kiwi brahs but in the games he's played against Aus he's almost exclusively been the guy that comes on and gets given wickets because we're already 3/400 and looking to push towards a declaration and he's bowling slow half-trackers with a packed leg-side field. If you're in an ATG team match-up and you need a change bowler to come on when the opposition is 1/25 you're nuts if you're looking at Neil Wagner over Jimmy Anderson

Back to the list and criteria, is the general consensus that Kapil doesn’t make it?

I always rated him as a quick but I can understand people thinking he doesn’t belong here. He had a great record against Aus and WI, but there are some holes.

Hadlee
Southee
Jamieson
Cairns
Wagner

Good bowling unit with batting till 10. Vettori need not play. Bond can come in for an injury if he isn't injured himself.
