The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Actually, the discussion I entered into was prompted by some none-too-bright fella posting an AT team with Javagal Srinath and another bloke who’s played about 20 tests in the running to take the new ball. That’s an indictment after eight decades of playing test cricket. 70+ years of test cricket and Javagal Srinath opens the bowling to Len Hutton and Jack Hobbs? What level of abject mediocrity is that? Wally Hammond last seen quaking in his batting pads in the Pommy sheds, worried he’ll die of exhaustion after making an unbeaten 850.

Am a fan of Javagal, he’s under rated overall, but he shouldn’t be in consideration for an AT side unless he played for minnows with little to no pedigree like Zimbabwe or SL. It’s pretty laughable to think he’s in the discussion. Basically a skinny Merv Hughes - whole hearted and went well, but about three tiers shy of ATG status at its kindest.

Yeah but Vettori being a bonafide lock with a bowling average that rounds to 35 is pretty damning too. NZ's dearth of spinners should get way more stick than it does. Vettori was always just there. Just eh.

I wonder if he’d be considered on bowling alone if he wasn’t a decent shout to bat at 7 or 8 and make regular runs? Not many other options, mind you. CBF looking at NZ spinner numbers, aside from Clarrie Grimmett’s. Couldn’t tell you what Bracewell’s numbers were like but I recall he wasn’t much chop either. Maybe they’d look to play Vettori at seven as a spinning allrounder, then Hadlee at eight and three other seamers.

Jadeja
Kapil
Ashwin/Gupte/Kumble
Shami
Bumrah

This is India's best bowling line-up. Sad compared to others but at least it bats deep (if Ashwin plays).

It bats deep if Kumble plays tbf. Was more than handy. I’d have Shami in there too. Bowls tough spells. Love him.

Might cripple them both, he was rapid. I mean, at this point I see you are butthurt enough and have the troll flowing through you. But consider the fact that Javagal was frankly better than Lillee everywhere except his hometown, NZ and ENG?

Bumrah and Pant will have to contend with the fact that they are mostly going to be remembered for teabagging AUS - a team that bends over on command for us. Our whipping boys. The fans are subjectively going to underrate their performances, sadly.

Whatever it takes!!!
Genuinely feel Srinath would have fared far better with better support around him. Under rated bowler. So unfortunate his career came to an end just as the fab 4 formed on the batting side. Fab 4 + Kumble, Bhajji, Zak, Srinath would have been so awesome.

The only way srinath takes a single pole in a test betwen AT sides is if one of the opposition fall over laughing at his inclusion and is out hit wicket. It’s embarrassing he’s in consideration. I don’t k ow whether that’s an indictment on the other options or your judgment. I suspect it’s both.

edit: this post overlapped with HB’s and is directed to the h_h/ deathscar/ papadribblerknight clone

He’s not AT standard mate. Nowhere near it. Good bowler, used to love watching him, but nothing like AT. I mean, Anderson isn’t AT standard (ATVG for sure), and he’s better than Srinath.

Well, sure. But I feel he would have had better stats for sure had his career started at the same time as Zak, for example. Its always difficult to rate these lone ranger type careers but my opinion is that he is definitely a contender for the Indian ATG side and would have done far better than what he did had he played even a decade later. Neither of that means he is genuine AT standards though, but that is fine.

Easily THE most underrated cricketer from India. Was the spearhead and also did the gruntwork of bowling dry. Ishant and Bumrah rolled in one.
