The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

U19 Captain
Muralitharan is the only spin bowler in the last 50 years in that Wisden Top 10 peak list. 250+ wickets in 33 Tests with 23 5-fer at an average of 17 is unreal.

Nice article on Wilfred Rhodes: Wisden - Wilfred Rhodes

He must have been an amazing player. Going at less than 20 with the ball in his final season is pretty impressive by itself but when you consider that it was in a good era for batting with Rhodes 53 years old, it becomes even more so. And that is backed up by him batting at an average of 23.

In the fourth paragraph in the article Wisden asserts:

The extraordinary nature of his transition from bowler to batsman and then -- while not losing his batting -- back to bowler again
That would seem to go against CW's generally accepted standard that Rhodes never excelled in both major disciplines at the same time. The thing is, doing all that work in the inter-war period aged 41 to 53 is frankly phenomenal. Should be remembered as legendary. Rhodes is up with the likes of Hobbs and Grimmett in achievements after the age of 40.

Definitely deserves my avatar.

Wish CricketArchive didn’t have a paywall so I could see his county stats over the years. His raw first class stats are still ridiculous. Almost 31000 overs bowled. Ridiculous.

It was not. However, now that I look at it, I feel he should be at the top of that list.

Smith
Hayden
Sehwag
Cook
Gooch
I'd almost put Cook at the top or 2nd. England is not an easy place to open. Smith did it bloody well though, I'll never forget watching his 277 and 254 as a kid

Whatever it takes!!!
I don't think I would have Gooch that low but I didn't see him at his prime. Of the folks I have seen, I will put this way:

Smith
Cook
Hayden
Sehwag

@Jedi: Have you seen footage/read much of Gooch? Or just going by stats

I only ask because I've never seen you discuss players pre '95 really

all I know about Gooch is that he mad a moustache

I probably could have at least googled his stats but hey
Actually his raw stats back up your claim

It was his record opening in the back half of his career people rate him highly for. When every team he played was carrying an ATG bowler or two each

Gooch was a pretty damn good all round player and I watched him in his prime which was pretty late in his career, but there is only so high you can rank a player averaging 42 odd. He took ages to figure out his game. If he had done it a decade earlier, which he should have, he would be at the top of that list for me.

A batting version of Ishant probably, but I don't want to open another debate there:laugh:

Is Gooch a kind of cult English hero?
Back in the day when there weren't too many triple-centurions, his name would be one of the easiest one to remember
