The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Is Gooch a kind of cult English hero?
Back in the day when there weren't too many triple-centurions, his name would be one of the easiest one to remember
I think he has always been wrongly cast as a bit miserable and boring personality wise. He isn't in the public eye at all here and rarely gets punditry work. He has been doing a bit on the debate but that's about it I think. When people take of our better players from that time it's normally Botham gower or willis. I think the rebel tour harmed his post cricket career

I mean both Marshall and Steyn are in my top 5 fast bowlers. Only one of Sobers and Kallis is in my top 5 batsmen. Plus, for team balance, since there’s no top tier spinner in there, its nice to have Sobers and Shakib backing up Rashid.

Whatever it takes!!!
Especially being his own countryman. I’d be surprised if for example Ponting came out and said, yep I’m better than Border and Waugh.

Also coz Gooch was a bit of a hero to Cook, growing up. I mean, its like Kohli and Tendulkar. Even if Kohli has an objective case of being better than Sachin, I don't see him ever agreeing with that. He will always insist Sachin was better.

Having said that, what I put stock into is that Gooch can't be that far behind a Cook if Cook himself rates him that high.

Uhh... Before you stat it please consider that Philander has better stats than Steyn.
You mean how Philander has been **** in Asia while Steyn has a great record in Asia.

You mean how Marshall was arguably the best among half a dozen ATG bowlers in the 1980s while Steyn was the only ATG fast bowler between 2006-2015 and still managed to how Marshall or Hadlee level stats.

Stats is not a synonym for career average.

Steyn has significantly better stats in virtually every important aspect of bowling.
My two favourite Steyn stats :

1. Steyn took his 400th wicket in 16634 balls.

Everyone else took more than 20000 balls. That includes James Anderson, Courtney Walsh, Glen McGrath, Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose, Richard Hadlee, Shaun Pollock, Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, Stuart Broad, Rangana Herath, Harabhajan Singh.

2.

Steyn has taken 439 wickets in 18608 balls.

Lillee has taken 355 wickets in 18467 balls.

Dale Steyn is the greatest wicket taking bowler ever IMO.
