True, but can you really see Srinath being a threat to AT teams? I'd take Kumble and either Bedi or Harbhajan over any of the third seamer options India has. At least in an away side.

India away:

Sehwag
Gavaskar
Dravid
Tendulkar
Kohli
Ganguly
Dhoni/Engineer
Kapil
Harbhajan
Kumble
Bumrah
Srinath might be a threat, Ganguly isn't. If your opinion is that Srinath isn't gonna be a threat, why on earth would you want Ganguly to bowl?

Shami, I think, has a fairly good argument for being included in India's side already (as opposed to Bumrah) because of his great work as the 3rd pacer. No one else comes close. 69 wickets @ 26 with SR of 46.

To give the option to play two spinners. I guess you could play two spinners without a third seam option but Ganguly also gives you a captaincy option as well.

I guess you could go Shami/Bhuvi, Bumrah and Kapil instead but that puts two guys in your side who haven't really played enough to be there.

This is the best way to actually create an ATG Indian team that might win tests, imo:

Gavaskar
Mankad
Dravid
Tendulkar
Kohli
Laxman/Hazare (either)
Dhoni +
Kapil
Ashwin
Shami
Srinath (Bumrah if he gets back and manages something close to 150-200 wickets at the rate he currently goes at)

Five legit bowling options with Kapil, Srinath/Bumrah, Shami, Ashwin, Mankad

Bumrah improves the side significantly but I think he needs 150 test wickets before he's considered.

Offence taken.

We gonna go through the whole "Miller doesn't take enough wickets" bs again aren't we?

the bloke could arguably be considered a genuine ATG as a bowler alone. Just because he didn't bowl more doesn't mean that he couldn't.

I think Miller works best as a third seamer in the team if you are planning to bowl two spinners.

Miller was in a particularly good situation while he played. He got the new ball with Lindwall, but unlike Ray, he primarily only had to bowl with the new ball. In a sense he was like the inverse early career Walsh. So while that explains his relatively low WPM, it may also have boosted his average a bit as well as he didn't have to do the hard slogging with the old ball, at least not as much as others, even Lindwall, had to.

He was though, very good in that particular role could be an ideal 3rd seamer in the right conditions and team composition.

Mankad over Sehwag weakens the batting considerably and doesn't improve the bowling. Just make Ashwin/Kumble bowl their arm off.

Ganguly should be considered on away tours for his medium pace bowling. He opened the bowling for India at one point and could slot in nicely at first change behind Kapil and Bumrah, allowing India to play two spinners abroad.
A lot of these questions would be answered in the next 5 years.

Ganguly shouldn't be anywhere close to being a 3rd seamer. You just want India to get beaten every time we travel isn't it ?

So because he did nothing to prove he could do something we have to just believe that he could do it regardless of there being no evidence to suggest he could? Afraid it doesn't work like that.

Ha no, just throwing out ideas to try and get India some overseas wins.

Honestly an ATG India side are probably invulnerable at home but would struggle against most other sides abroad. At least England, Aus, WI, South Africa and probably NZ too. Pakistan would be even and India's would dominate Sri Lanka, Murali notwithstanding.

I don't think India's AT XI would win in Sri Lanka. We only won there in 2015 after Murali was long gone, Jayawardene retired and Sangakkara on the verge of retirement.

An ATG SL team would have players who played between 1995-2015. India did decently in SL during this period, never got marauded. Held them to a draw in 1997, lost 1-2 in 2001, lost 1-2 in 2008 and drew 1-1 in 2010.

Add Gavaskar,Kapil and Kohli to those indian teams and it would be very close, could go either way.

Just figuring how strong AT SA side would be

Smith C
Richards
Amla
Kallis
Pollock
DeVilliers wk
Proctor
Pollock
Tayfield
Steyn
Donald

That opening duo would be handy. One swings away other in both at express pace. Really love to see a short burst from those two at the end of day 2 after Pollock and co amassing 550/600
