It's just that there are precious few South African batsman who have scored plenty of runs at 5 or 6. It seems to be an 'historical' weakness.

Certainly not. Whatever you think of Geoff Boycott missing for three tough years (which was coincidence and not due to any ill reasoned BS about him being afraid of the bowling) he was head and shoulders above the rest (metaphorically if not physically.)

So Geoff Boycott is the obvious choice as the best English batsman of the 1970s. He may even be THE batsman of the 1970s because he batted at both the beginning and end of the decade, and Miandad and Richards didn't.
However, Boycott did miss a couple of key years due to his self imposed exile. So I think that the true best batsman of the decade should go to either Gavaskar or Chappell, although WSC does confuse things somewhat.
I was surprised that Miandad was the only Pakistan batsman to make the cut-off, and pleasantly surprised that both Redpath and Viswanath have averages higher than Lloyd. If anyone wants to add Vishy to their ATG Indian team then I won't complain. After all, he did have style.

Yep, I get the same team.
Which just goes to show - you can't build an ATG XI on Statsguru and averages alone.
There needs to be other criteria like;
Context: Who they played, where they played, and when they played.
Peer Review: How do other contemporary professional cricketers rate them?
Expert Review: How do journalists and historians rate them?
Legacy: What sort of legacy do they leave behind?
