The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Cricketer Of The Year
Last 50 years India XI:

  1. Sunil Gavaskar
  2. Virendra Sehwag
  3. Rahul Dravid
  4. Sachin Tendulkar
  5. Virat Kohli
  6. M S Dhoni (wk&c)
  7. Ravindra Jadeja
  8. Kapil Dev
  9. Ravichandran Ashwin
  10. Anil Kumble
  11. Jasprit Bumrah
Yep, exactly the India AT XI

Last 50 years England XI:

  1. Graham Gooch
  2. Alastair Cook
  3. David Gower
  4. Joe Root
  5. Kevin Pietersen
  6. Ben Stokes (c)
  7. Ian Botham
  8. Alan Knott (wk)
  9. Graeme Swann
  10. Bob Willis
  11. James Anderson

You could make a very valid England AT XI without anyone of them (Root and Jimmy just makes mine, could very easily replace them with Compton/Barrington/May and Statham/Larwood/Bedser)
Boycott over Gooch easily for me.

India's 3rd best pacer isn't good enough to replace Kumble overall.
Good luck playing at the Gabba or Perth with only 2 quicks. You have no batsman that can bowl some medium pace either

At least my Aussie side had Lillee, McGrath & Cummins to bowl pace, Warne and Border to bowl spin and Chappell and Waugh to bowl some medium pace

Ashwin and Kumble both have performed in Gabba in certain conditions... Overall, this India team isn't beating the Australian one in Australia; but they're also not losing against Australia at home.

Woke up and can't sleep so picked this.

NZ XI May 74 - present day
(Turner not considered as he was mostly unavailable in the time frame and did poorly when he played)

Mark Richardson
John Wright
Kane Williamson
Martin Crowe
Ross Taylor
Daryl Mitchell
BJ Watling
Richard Hadlee
Kyle Jamieson
Neil Wagner
Shane Bond

2nd XI
Stephen Fleming (makeshift opener - if Conway averages 45+ for the next 2 years he'll take the spot and Fleming will move to 4)
Tom Latham
Andrew Jones
John F Reid
Jesse Ryder
Brendon McCullum wk
Jacob Oram
Chris Cairns
Daniel Vettori
Tim Southee
Trent Boult

Was tempted to pick McCullum as an opener for the 2nd team, make one of Smith, Parore, or Blundell keeper and move Oram, Cairns, and Vettori up one.

Surely Bumrah, Shami and Dev + Ashwin & Jadeja is a better choice on pacey wickets

How is Chris Cairns not one of the 5 best players so just need to fit him in?

No point playing 5 seamers. Cairns is only picked if we pick Vettori and 4 seamers.

Anyway, the first 5 picked are Hadlee, Williamson, Crowe, Watling, and Taylor as all were better than Cairns.

Cairns also misses out because Mitchell averages 50 and Jamieson averages 20.

I want to see the @capt_Luffy Indian XI with 3 spinners play the @Fuller Pilch NZ XI with no spinners 😉
Ahem:

Ross Taylor, Right Arm Off Break, bowling average 16
Mark Richardson, Slow Left Arm, bowling average 21
Kane Williamson, another offie/chucker, best bowling innings 4/44

If you want a spinner, drop Mitchell for Vettori and make the 6-11 read
Watling (wk)
Vettori
Hadlee
Jamieson
Wagner
Bond

Need to drop Bond or Jamieson for Cairns then.

Why? If you don't like Vettori at 7, put Vettori at 8 and Hadlee at 7. Hadlee averaged 32 at 7 in a tough batting era. Jamieson is a fine 9.
The batting is Not ATG standard if Hadlee bats at 7 and Watling at 6. You also imo don't need 5 proper frontline bowlers.

That's why I picked 4 in the original team. Anyway, Vettori would be there as an allrounder, not a frontliner.

Watling at 6 is as good or better than Stokes and Dhoni at 6.
Hadlee at 7 is weaker than Botham and Jadeja at 7 even though he averaged 32 at 7.
Vettori at 8 is better than Knott and equal to Kapil.

Anyway, there is a good chance that one of both of Ravindra and Phillips would make this side in 5-6 years.
Ravindra as an opener as a better version of Jayasuriya, and Phillips as a better version of D'Oliveira at 6, with Watling at 7 then 4 quicks would be a quality side

Bond played only 18 tests and you are including him in a Team. Should I laugh or cry seeing you ?
