Tbh it's another really stupid method of rating players...... Arguably Sobers wasn't the best at any moment as well. Many a times many great players just have a coinciding peak really. Not being the best of an era shan't be the argument against "Mr 2" of cricket.
Couple of points to that.

How can you definitively have an argument to be the best after Bradman, and you were never the best in the world for any extended period of time.

And the statement you're replying to wasn't even referring to that. Hammond got blitzed and lost his spot to Bradman, but without Bradman it would have definitely been his era as he was the clear no 2. He would have been the man, it would have gone Hobbs, Hammond, Hutton, Sobers.... Sunny wasn't that clear cut no. 2. It was Barry and Chappell, then Viv and Chappell and in the 80's Viv and Border.

So when trying to compare players this close, and bring from different eras and trying to determine who was greater, this helps us to place them and how they dominated and was seen in their era.

Nah, Barry and Chappell weren't as good as Sunny, simply put. Viv was World's undisputed best for 5 years only as well, Lara arguably 93-95 but that's not something to vouch for, Sobers have given example of etc. Don't think being best for 3-4 years undoubtedly is a big deal, you have to be for atleast 10 years imo.

This was a brilliant knock in a low scoring game that was probably worth twice the runs he actually got.

Yeah at that phase Lara didn't have his eyesight issues and tackled the great pacers fairly well. In ODIs he was scoring tons for fun against Donald, Wasim and Waqar.

Once he had his eye problem in 94, along with other problems of professionalism, he really struggled against the 2Ws and Donald in the late 90s and frankly even other quality pacers in the 2000s.
