Viv himself knew Gavaskar was better.

When Indian Actor Manoj Bajpayee approached him for an autograph, Manoj said " you are the best player in the world ".
Viv replied.. No.. Gavaskar is the best player in the world.. I am just the best player from the best team.
Sauce?

Viv would never say that

I wouldn’t know. iirc I’ve seen people saying in the post peak thread that his SL tons don’t matter and he scored two tons in B/G but only averaged xx so he was ****. Its hard to predict tbh. People also seem to get quite aggressive in certain one on one comparisons involving certain players.
Nah, Smith won both polls, so technically speaking, he is already rated above Viv

Gut sense is that Hutton doesn't belong in a top tier with those much more universally celebrated.
Every great batsman post war has one USP.

Sobers : Greatest all rounder

Viv : Most destructive batsman

Sunny : Faced the fastest bowlers as opener

Sachin : Most runs & tons. Don himself picked him

Lara : 375. 400.

Sadly Hutton doesn’t really have any selling point

It isn’t such a great selling point tbh

Smith averaging 60+ was his USP. From 2016(49th Test) to 2023 (99th Test), his career average didn’t drop below 59.

Even on many cricket forums, people were in awe of that. Many Indian fans celebrated when his average dropped below 59.
Hutton had the toughest home pitches and opened against some pretty good quality attacks and has a record with practically no weaknesses/holes
