So watching this series, and again today Smith seemingly not kicking off in his 2nd match innings, wondering when was the last time he scored a 3rd or 4th innings hundred.

2019, and that was a 3rd innings knock.

He's never scored a 4th innings hundred. Of the 7 other batsmen we look at as being in his class, he's the only one without a 4th innings century.

He also has the lowest 4th innings average of all of them.

He also has the lowest 2nd match innings average of all of them as well.

Obviously ignoring Bradman, averages in each march innings

Hobbs
56 | 67 | 35 | 57 (63.55 / 46.11)

Tendulkar
65 | 55 | 46 | 36 (60.10 / 42.78)

Richards
53 | 48 | 49 | 47 (50.79 / 48.82)

Sobers
57 | 61 | 57 | 46 (59.40 / 53.15)

Smith
83 | 49 | 40 | 32 (69.34 / 38.09)

Lara
70 | 59 | 40 | 35 (63.94 / 38.19)

Hutton
65 | 65 | 41 | 45 (65.40 / 43.04)

Make of that what you will, but it's one thing to set up a match, a totally different and equally vital to save or win it at the end.

A surprise?

Viv, same as his home and away stats, remarkably consistent numbers across innings.

Different ball game when trying to win. Much more difficult. Smith for some reason falls away in the 3rd and 4th innings.

I tell people all the time Viv was that guy and here is evidence yet again...

Yawn. Lara averages 38 (35 in the 4th innings) and nobody accuses him of a problem. Smith would have had a 4th innings ton against the Windies earlier this year while opening if someone could’ve stuck around (yes I know batting with the tail is a skill).

Hutton has 0 tons in the 4th innings compared to 3 for Sutcliffe. Should we rate him higher based on that fact alone?

Williamson of the Fab Four has by far the best record in the 4th innings with 5 tons. Nobody is even saying he’s top 2, people will argue he’s 4th of them.

Ponting has 4 tons in the 4th innings and averages 50. Better than Lara?

Steven Smith has a perfect record and almost no flaws that we have to nitpick small things like this or in Sachin’s case(not having monster series).

Useless stat:

Two notable batsmen who averaged 50+ in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings - Herbert Sutcliffe and Dudley Nourse. A current player with a decent career is very close to it as well.

Williamson
49.92
64.54
51.48
51.57

I honestly do not think it is such a big deal

Even Bradman averages “less” in the fourth innings

I rate Smith number 2 among batsmen who played since 1948
