South Africa team selection

I think Bedingham has more credit in the bank than Rickelton. Maharaj has to play in Cape Town so I can see Mulder coming back in as well. Paterson and Rickelton out. Thoughts?

Pata has 2 fivers in 2 games. Probably rickelton & Bosch who miss out.

Agree about Bosch. Mulder was the man in possession, and while Bosch was obviously great with the bat and ball for the two first innings, he wasn't too effective the second time around in either case. He's definitely a player who can make things happen, but his career stats suggest that he struggles a bit for consistency, so that may work against him.

Agree although I think I quite like combinations.

Whilst Mulder is rightly the man in possession we also shouldn't think he has nailed his position and been consistent. Played a lot of games. Even now whilst he has picked things up it's not exactly so dominant that he can't lose his position.

C Bosch and Pato
Mulder and Coetzee/Nortje

I guess the question is whether Mulder and Bosch are actually competing for a place. Picking Bosch when you're going for a 7-4 split with an all seam attack is one thing, but when Maharaj comes back playing four seamers means that one of them needs to be an all-rounder.

Mulder's good enough to bat at 7, but is Bosch? He does average over 40 in first-class but that's due to a fair number of not outs, and he's yet to make a century. We finally seem to have moved away from playing Jansen at 7, but would Bosch at 7 be going down the same route?

Would be slightly better but not great. Bosch & Jansen are NR.8's for me, Bosch the slightly better 4 day batter of the two. Play Mulder or play 7 batsmen for me.

Agreed it's not a dead certainty that he can be a 7 but it also does take a bit of something to rock up on debut & do what he did.

Ive long been pick your best 7 batsmen and 4 best bowlers type. You need bankers & if you have a 5th bowling option then great. But I'm sort of leaning towards being greater than the sum of our parts sort of team & even both Bosch and Jansen may be 8s, if you have both and just one comes off it could be lethal.

If the CT summer had been hot and dry I'm not sure I would go both Mulder and Paterson but as you know there has been an unusual amount of rain and muggyness which we don't normally get. And also maybe slightly respecting the pecking order for now that going Mulder and Pato for Newlands should be fine. Could be lots of movement around.

This would be an easier discussion if Mulder was getting consistent runs but he has only now showed glimpses of being the player we thought he could be. He scored a hundred 2 Tests ago so I think he has some credit as well.

Mulder has been so heavily invested in that I think he has to play now if he's fit and the balance suits given he's finally started delivering on the faith. Half a good game from Bosch who clearly has all the attributes but a putrid FC record shouldn't really place him ahead.

As we end another test year here is the Proteas year on year and decade by decade performances since readmission.

Reds are the years with more losses than wins.

Elgar was a lone warrior for us in the last few years until his retirement. Will always appreciate him. I was listening to the post match interview with Markram and he made a comment about knowing that his career will never be record breaking but he wants to contribute to the team…I still think it will be a travesty if he doesn’t get his average to 40+ by the time he calls it quits.

Deano was. I don't know why Shukri wanted him out but it's done now.

I saw those comments. I felt a bit sad reading them. Just acknowledging at 30 that he cant achieve much from an individual point of view. Whether it's because of the pressure he has been under (using that mentality now)& the fact we play so little so just enjoy each match as it comes as a blessing for team success. Cricket is an individual game with a team game but even in other sports us fans look for greatness, so I think it's sad that he feels he cant achieve something special still in his career in the next 4 or 5 years from an individual perspective which in turn helps the team anyway.

It's actually scary how opposite Markram & Bavuma have been in their outcomes. Ones average has kept dropping and one is climbing but yet their careers feel so similar. Both now so close on the list in averages on the below criteria for SA.

Highest SA test batting averages Min 1000 runs (sorry Barry, Lee & co)

Just a reminder that this Newlands test will be our last home test until September 2026. Which will be the first time Australia are here for tests since Sandpaper Gate. A whole 8/9 years later.

Will be going the first couple of days.
