South Africa team selection

That batting performance from Rickelton was almost chanceless bar an edge that didn't carry early on. It was so dominant. His shifting of weight into the cover and straight drive was immaculate. Can't see how he doesn't keep the opening spot now. The biggest satisfaction for him, is the mountains of SA domestic runs he has scored and facing disappointment of not being selected for Australia tour. He looked like he just wanted to keep batting and hungry for runs which is what this batting line-up needed more of. That was a good marker for this growing batting group. Only the 16th SA to score a double century (even if you include some of the isolation guys who more than likely would have done it), that is an impressive feat.

If Bedingham does get the chop then it might be what suits our balance if Mulder is still considered the guy. Also think much of Mulder's slight upward curve is him batting more aggressively so 6/7 is ideal and Verreynne gets 6 because 4 test 100s.

So we then have a fight for number 3 position. As much as I rate Brevis I think he needs to come in 4/5/6 in his initial chance. Whereas TdZ, Breetzke and Hermann have opened and batted 3 so know all about the challenges of the new ball in SA.

Just not sure which way around 4 and 5 should be.

Markram
Rickelton
De Zorzi/Breetzke/Hermann
Bavuma
Stubbs
Verreynne
Mulder

You could tell he wanted to go big, and that’s not something we have been used to since the hey days of AB, Amla, Smith etc. I really don't understand why Mulder was moved to 3, but it’s apparent Conrad wants him in the team so if as you say his spot is nailed lower down, I don’t know if de Zorzi should get an automatic recall at 3. He screams number 5 to me but I also think he isn’t that great against quality spin. The number 3 spot in Tests is very tough to be successful at across the world at the moment so maybe the thinking is stick Mulder there since he has another arrow in his quiver (bowling) and even if he doesn’t score mountains of runs he is still in the team. Bedingham is obviously very talented but he seems the opposite of say Stubbs who wants to get stuck in and play lots of deliveries where as Bedders wants to dominate quite quickly. Perhaps it’s a style he has built from all the FC games he has played and is finding it tougher to change in comparison to Stubbs who is basically learning at Test level.

Kyle Verreynne has scored 4 Test tons. QDK got 6. That was surprising to me when I realised it. Still rocks and diamonds but maybe he can get that average close to 40…

I'm always surprised his average is as low as it is whenever I check. When he's not making memorable contributions he seems to basically be a tailender.

I think they will give TdZ a bit of extra string for obvious reasons. The funny thing is you could probably switch those 3 of Markram, de Zorzi and Rickelton any way you want. They all do have slight issues if they aren't moving and shifting weight well. That goes for most batsman I guess. Why I go TdZ 3 is that's where he started nicely and it's obviously the gap opening up and brings Breetzke and Hermann into play who have shown the ability to score big runs for 3 seasons minimum now.

I think it is that, thinking you can hit good balls for 4 from bowlers not as quick in England domestic cricket. But we obviously can't take away the mountains of runs he has scored.

If you watched his innings yesterday you can see why. Such a poor starter with his lack of feet movement. What was impressive is that Pakistan smelt the chance to knock us over with the new ball but he gutsed it out and got through it. Took one pull for 6 and he was away with his natural fast scoring and he was getting into better positions.

Yeah TdZ at 3 makes the most sense. Rickelton shouldn't be shifted from opening now and TdZ has batted plenty there.

Leaves Bedingham without a place which I hate but he sadly doesn't really deserve it. I hope he's persisted with as the spare bat and not dumped entirely though.

He's the obvious choice as the spare bat for the WTC final because of his experience playing in England.

And talking of experience in England, Paterson as the third seamer for that final?

Interesting quote from Verreynne.

Conrad knew Heinrich Klaasen and preferred the instinctive way he went about his game and let Verreynne know that. "He was probably the first coach that I've had that explained his thinking to me thoroughly," Verreynne said. "He explained exactly why I wasn't playing. I went on an A tour to Sri Lanka (with Conrad) after that ever since then, I've just really felt backed by him. It was also an opportunity to sort of clear the mind and sort of get back to the way that I normally play."
One of reasons for the Springboks' success has been Rassie Erasmus's openness with the players. It seems like Shukri Conrad's adopting the same sort of approach, and it's paying dividends.

Going to be a very tough decision if everyone is fit. Coetzee, ngidi, Paterson, bosch and maphaka all fighting for one spot. Then you also have the outside chance of Nortje returning to white ball cricket.

I think Conrad backs him so he will be around.

Good depth in the fast bowling department, a good problem to have, i would prefer Ngidi to concentrate on ODIs and T20s, would love Nortje to come back to test cricket, Burger and Sipamla also in the mix .
