South Africa team selection

Matthew Boast can bowl in the 140's and can bat aswell ..

Very promising player
Very exciting. Him and CJ King are big big boys. Maybe similar in what they do.

Still find it pretty cool Boast is the great nephew of the Great Vince van Der Bijl.

Frustrating he hasn't got much opportunity but when he has, let no one down. No idea why he missed the England Lions game. Corbin Bosch came in for him.

I haven't been paying close attention to the ODI team but I did some digging with regards to our batting...

Temba Bavuma : that average is still + 42 but he has gone 15 games without a half century stretching back to Sep 2023 against Aus. Infact his last 14 innings have brought him an average of 20 and strike rate below 80.

Rassie: since the WC semi he has had 10 innings with an average of 14.80 and a strike rate of sub 60.

Markram: since the Semi he has an average of 28 and Strike rate of sub 77.

Look I'm not doing a statistical analysis per say but it struck me yesterday about how long its felt since we had one of our top 3 kick on in an ODI. de Zorzi scored a ton against India but even if he sticks around you really feel Rickelton needs to come in up top.

Where do Bedingham, Stubbs and Verreynne fit into the top 6?

On a side note Bosch gave me Morris vibes yesterday. I also fully believe that if Jansen sorted out his shot selection he would average close to 30 in ODIs. He has amazing ball striking ability.

Edit: just to add that there is exactly 1 50+ score between the three mentioned in this post since the WC semi.

We talk about that next batting group ie Rickelton, De Zorzi, Stubbs, Breetzke, Brevis, Ferreira and those sorts to hopefully put their hands up consistently to usher us into next era. A few of them are building up good experience. Lhuandre looks a bit special too. SA20 hopefully gets more people into an elite winning environment. Be interesting to see if newbies put their hands up in the SA20 this year. Opportunity is tough as well because I think we enjoying that quality v quality with only 6 teams and 10 games. Not sure if I would ever want it to expand to more teams? Do we have the depth? I think we might do but Im still not sure I would want it watered down & stretched over a longer period.

Anyways here is my breakdown of SA cricket.
* Is played SA U19s
X played for SA but not in SA20

Bottom group. Some more suited to the longer formats and unlikely to ever play SA20 but also a few who hope to be SA20 players in the future. Quite a few players there that could still count as rookie as well.

Colour coding as usual for Province produced.

I think there is room for a place like Bloem to get an SA20 team, the other place would be potch. I wouldn't go beyond those 2 in future but not not currently.

I've come to the conclusion with not many elite world stars that the thing that may keep us competitive until we find more stars is competition for places.

So Corbin popping up keeps Wiaan and Marco on their toes.

But in the batting chopping and changing isn't normally the best but if we go this route it might be what gets De Zorzi, Rickelton & Bedingham finding more? So it's interesting finding that balance & saying let's see what Breetzke and Hermann can do if given a chance.

De Zorzi will only be under pressure if we develop a quality depth of African batters, fingers crossed Seletswane can be one of them going forward ..as for Bedingham and Rickelton they have less wiggle room and rightly so , you can't be averaging in the 30's with guys like Hermann and young Brevis waiting in the wings..If Brevis can develop his legspin he can become a valuable no.6 in tests

Agreed. What I do like about Shukri is he isn't afraid to make tough and surprising decisions. So if he feels TdZ or Rickelton or Bedingham can be left out they will be.

Breetzke
Hermann
Brevis
Ackerman

Is my current pecking order of next best. They may be like or worse than De Zorzi, Rickelton & Bedingham but I think what we finding now with these guys is who can perform under pressure most consistently. I don't think there is much between them ability wise.

Agreed on Seletswane. Fingers crossed.

You know what's quite funny, we had Australia, England and India in the cycle before this and still came third. We still have a lot of gaps in our cricket to try find elite players but we still are managing to compete in test cricket and go deep in major white-ball tournaments.

Whatever it takes!!!
I dunno why our RSA fans here are being so defensive? You are a bloody good side right now and if some consider this your weakest ever side, it means you have been a great side historically. :)

This is a good point. We are building a great pool of players though. I tip my hat to Conrad for that. I didn't have Corbin Bosch having a huge impact on my bingo card.
