As a fan at that stage lost complete confidence in Bavuma and would prefer Hendricks and honestly that game was so close 20 rather than a duck might have made a difference. But my major annoyence on that was more the fact that he wasn't completely healed from injury. The fact that it still feels decisions aren't made on results is concerning to say the least.

And agree with your statement, I think the biggest difference is the players mentioned has earned that trust and confidence. I don't see that in Bavuma, can others say they do as that for me is surprising.
Yeah honestly I get where your coming from. If bavuma wasn't fully fit he shouldn't have fielded in the second innings bare minimum.

On the confidence and trust thing, how had bavuma not earned that. I'm not sure if your familiar with Australian cricket, which is fair as an SA fan, but mitch marsh had opened for a grand total of ~10 ODI's coming into the WC, and zampa had the same situation as bavuma (He averaged 35 with the ball in ODI cricket before his gun 4 year run leading into the WC). Bavuma averaged 53 with the bat between the two WC's, he was in a similiar bot to the aformentioned two players in terms of confidence and trust.

Look if I was a Aus fan I would have been saying the same of Zampa to be fair and there was a time I didn't rate him at all. He did prove that wrong, however still don't rate him but that's a different story.

On Marsh it's different in what his role is suppose to be in contrast to Bavuma and he showed clearly that he can be that aggressor. Where as Bavuma role is an anchor and vital on top order so that the free playing De Kock can Bat around him and if De Kock fails build the inning for the explosive middle order similar role to Van Der Dussen. He hasn't showed that he can consistently do that above other factors of being dropped previously from the shorter format and historical having major dips in form for periods of time.

What is being said is that you cannot drop due to being captain and if you look at the T20 world cup this felt very familiar to say the least so no the confidence in him based on past experience isn't very high for me personally.

I guess it's just a difference in opinion then, honestly. I get the t20 WC point, bavuma shouldn't have been anywhere near that team. I just try to take them as two different format's and not weight too heavily on one when thinking about the other. Completely understand if you look at it a different way.

We are in agreement, just closing point I'm not saying a cricketer like Bavuma can't earn his spot however this is what he needs to do.

I really don't rate Maharaj however if you put a gun to my head he deserves his spot as he continues to deliver. And that is sport. Results over opinion.

Bavuma scored 145 runs in 8 matches averaging 18 and not just his form was questioned but also injuries to caputulate this his replacement in Hendricks played 2 matches and scored 97 runs at 48 average. Who keeps a batsman in a world cup averaging 18 and expect to win it? Furthermore the games he didn't play obviously didn't hurt the Proteas it did the opposite. How and why are we defending that?
Yes, Bavuma had a poor tournament, but there was no way of knowing that would be the case after two matches, which is when you're suggesting he should have been dropped.

Yes because I tuaght they would've tried Hendricks against Netherlands. The very next game he did play and score 85. At that point logic dictated stay with Hendricks. Just my opinion.

Why would they have tried Reeza though? I know Bavuma hasn't had the best of runs as Captain in two WCs now but Bavuma the T20 player and Bavuma the ODI player are two different beasts. He has credit in the ODI format. Reeza on his good day is a wonderful stroke player but he has never put up the numbers in ODIs.

What most of my comments was about his lack of form and fitness(injury) concerns. Also the fact that the results are similar even tough format is different. It all feels the same when it comes to Bavuma and Hendricks was on a rich run of form.

So was Bavuma. He averaged 72 in the series against Australia, so why should low scores in his next two matches justify him being dropped?
Same reason Bavuma didn't play the second last ODI due to a niggle and got 0 on the last ODI against Aus. If you watched the games after that he wasn't 100%. So why play him? Qeustioning of decisions are made from a cricketing point shouldn't be this hard.

I'm trying to figure out what the likely batting line up for the test will be. Assuming that Stubbs probably won't play gives seven batsmen: Bavuma, Bedingham, De Zorzi, Elgar, Markram, Petersen, and Verreynne.

Bavuma and Verreynne obviously will play, and ideally you'd want everyone who's going to be available for New Zealand to play. That just leaves Markram, but seven batsmen means there's no room for Mulder. So I guess it's a question of how badly they want an allrounder in the side.

Judging by how Conrad has gone I really think he is going to play Mulder. He likes the fifth bowler doesn't he? Probably:

1. Elgar
2. Markram
3. de Zorzi
4. Petersen
5. Bavuma
6. Verreynne
7. Mulder
8. Jansen
9. Maharaj
10. Rabada
11. Ngidi/Coetzee

I'm surprised that Conrad went back to Verreynne that quickly. I thought Klaasen was going to be given the Indian series.

I think that de Zorzi opens and Petersen players 3 with Markram at 4.

I would go horses for courses seeing that it is only a 2 Test match series .

The first Test is at Centurion,
Keshav Maharaj has played 5 test matches there and he averages 114 with the ball.
Against India he averages 94 with the ball in 7 tests, we would be as good as playing with 10 men if we start Maharaj at Centurion.

Our batting line up is weak and needs shoring up, Keegan Petersen has to play because he was very good the last time we played India and he's coming off a hundred for SA A ..

So if I was picking the team, I'd play 7 batsmen, and 4 seamers ..
Markram can bowl a few offies on his home ground if need be.

So my team for the first test would be:

1.Markram
2.Elgar
3.De Zorzi
4.Bedingham
5.Petersen
6 Bavuma
7.Verreynne (WK)
8.Jansen
9.Coetzee
10.Rabada
11.Ngidi
