I think I've said this before but I'd like QDK to give up the gloves and focus on becoming a specialist batsman - ABDV style. Not that he's not a great gloveman but given we have guys like Qeshile and Verreyne coming through, I think we should give up his glovework and focus on getting him in as a top/middle order batsman.I'm looking forward to the ODI re-build even if there is a slow start.
Test team. Still fuming how the test summer ended. It's the format I care most about. It was pretty embarassing. Markram & de Kock can become great batsmen. What I'm looking foward to the most for the test team. Bowling will be interesting. Philander/Steyn how long can their greatness go on for ? Philander might not even play in India. Ngidi on their backs & will likely start in India over Vernon.
We can't close ourselves off like in Sri Lanka. They didn't back Shamsi. Will they Piedt ?Can see us play Maharaj, Steyn and Rabada plus another spinner. Mulder at 6/7. Will Amla still be there?
My only concern is that it might take away from QdK's game ? But we got to expect there is a real possibility it may have to happen for the reasons you say.I think I've said this before but I'd like QDK to give up the gloves and focus on becoming a specialist batsman - ABDV style. I'd like to see something like
Markram
Elgar
Hamza
Faf
QDK
Mulder
Verreyne (wk)
Maharaj
<spinner?>
Steyn
Rabada
A team the selectors are more likely to consider would be
Markram
Elgar
Amla
Faf
Bavuma
QDK
Mulder
Maharaj
<spinner>
Steyn
Rabada
Although they may well not play Mulder at all and include whichever batsman they consider next in line. I could live with it if they picked Verreyne over Mulder.
Not quite sure which spinner is in line for the second spot? Piedt?
Fair point. i just feel that both Verreyne and QDK will be SA test players sooner rather than later. Meaning one will need to give up the gloves. While I rate Verreyne, QdK seems more likely to become a genuine 45+ test average batsman if nurtured correctly. We could really choose to go either way though. My only concern is that it might take away from QdK's game ? But we got to expect there is a real possibility it may have to happen for the reasons you say.
It will be Piedt. Can't see them trusting Shamsi.
Forgot about van Tonder. Haven't seen him in action, if I'm honest. Are Bedingham and Malan unlikely to make it?This is how I think they view the future of the Test batting.
Markram
Elgar (Breetzke)
Amla (Hamza)
Du Plessis (van Tonder)
Bavuma (Qeshile)
De Bruyn (Mulder/Verreynne)
De Kock
I wouldn't be writing anyone off.Forgot about van Tonder. Haven't seen him in action, if I'm honest. Are Bedingham and Malan unlikely to make it?
Piedt must be a show in by now. Can even add some runs. I wonder is Muthusamy has a shot at an all rounder spot in place of Mulder for India? It will be Piedt. Can't see them trusting Shamsi.
QDK needs to stay at 7 (maybe 6). I think it suits his temperament and I think he likes keeping. If we can put together a strong top 6, a fast scoring QDK coming in at 7 will be devastating for most bowling attacks. Can turn 300/5 scores to 450/6 scores in a session. My only concern is that it might take away from QdK's game ? But we got to expect there is a real possibility it may have to happen for the reasons you say.
I think there are two things which count against Muthusamy. One is that he's the same type of bowler as Maharaj, so they might prefer someone else to give some variety. The other is that his batting possibly isn't quite good enough for a top 7 position - he'd be great as an 8, but I'm not sure whether he should bat higher.I wonder is Muthusamy has a shot at an all rounder spot in place of Mulder for India?
