South Africa team selection

So you saying we have a chance of finding 3 half decent batsmen out of those?
Hope so. Desperate to find some world class batsmen again which immediately gives us a chance of getting to number 1 in the world and staying there.

A few there have only just started to blossom at franchise level at 24,25,26

I think we might just do it.... I`m pretty positive about the overall look of cricket in SA. For all crickets problems think CSA have ensured a relatively good pipeline of cricket talent coming through.

But even if they're scared that Olivier might do a runner, it's not like he's irreplaceable. Yes, he's had an amazing summer, but we're not short on bowling talent with Ngidi and Nortje waiting in the wings. Admittedly, it's possible that Nortje has been talked up to more than he'll amount to, but there's no denying that the potential is there, and it's unlikely that South Africa is going to stop producing quality fast bowlers.

So if they're really playing Olivier to ensure that he stays here then I feel that's a bad move as it is to the detriment of the team to weaken the batting just to get him into the side.
Still don't think we can just afford to let Olivier go. I also don't think his selection has to do with Kolpak as GRAB mentioned. More just being rewarded for his performances but also have a coach who loves fast bowling.

Steyn/Philander could leave anywhere from the next 6 months to 18 months

Rabada, Ngidi, Olivier, Nortje (2 bowlers in Ngidi and Nortje have a history with injuries so it would be nice to have the buffer)

Looks unrealistic that Lizaad Williams and Daryn Dupavillon are getting anywhere in the mix and I have rated both so the next 3 are Lutho Sipamla, Eathan Bosch and Nandre Burger but they still need to prove themselves more. I think they need to get stronger and quicker too. Burger the only real swing bowler there? Do we have enough of those with no Steyn/Abbott ?

Pretty excited about the 4 SA u19 strike-bowlers in India though. They could be joining the franchise set-up really quickly in Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, Lifa Ntanzi & Achille Cloete. The only one that isn't dubbed fast is Marco Jansen but he is 6ft7 and left-arm which is much needed variation moving forward.

I can understand the concern if we suddenly lost Olivier because eventually the trough would run out.... but you can't guarantee him a place in the team. He is unlikely to play in the LO teams, so it comes down to his future. And I think that is a decision for him to make I can't see how CSA can make him any promises.

Edit: Burger is quality, think Sipamla and Bosch have shots at the LO teams long run.
Edit 2: and Coetzee is quality.

What quotas mean to rabada-
Merit got him on, not quotas. If they are overworking him because of quotas this is only interaction with them.

I can picture his interaction with csa.

So listen buddy, we have set up a system to benefit you as a black person. White people, they are normal. They move around, manage their workloads etc. You are protected. Because you are black, we tell you when to work. Time off is for whites only. No, you don't get to manage your health. No preventing injuries. No, you don't get to manage your body and career. You work when we tell you (all the time) until your body falls apart....
Slavery?
No this is empowerment.

They wont be planning his whole career around quotas. But its possible they are pushing him just a little harder because of quotas. That's messed up. If steyn has a niggle that he shouldn't really be playing with they might see olivier on the bench, better a fully fit olivier than a half fit steyn. In rabadas case they see the next test black bowler is phelequayo. Too big a difference. Rabada is told to man up and take some pain for the team. Not that uncommon, but not usually because you are black.

If they are doing this, even to a small degree, they need to stop. Take the hit and play an actual quota player. Don't screw over the individual, and don't burn out the quota reserve. Yes this will create a bunch of problems when compared to picking a quota player normally. Oh well

I've been fairly quiet on the forum lately, but I've had the feeling that our faltering batting would cost us. Maybe we could argue that the bowlers should defend 304 but they are the reason we have been winning matches. We left too many runs out there. And we have been leaving too many runs out there for a long time.

Elgar and pathetic form. Not dropable yet but he really is a hard watch when runs don't come. He needs to start showing some seniority in performance more regularly.

Amla is finished.

Bavuma is average.

Right now we living off the talents of Markram/de Kock and the doggedness of Faf.

I blame management for the mindset and to go in with 6 batsman considering the above is absolutely ludicrous.

It's not finished there.

Rabada started the day with two mis-fields where he looked like he didn't give a **** and he bowled like garbage. He needs a break but he also needs to hold back on the ego trip telling Otis he bowled at 70% in the Pakistan series.

Vernon Philander can't get through a series without an injury probably and really on certain pitches I wouldn't even gamble with selecting him right now.

Maharaj hasn't been in good form this season for the Dolphins in domestic cricket and whilst their batsmen are better at facing spin he was outbowled by the opposition spinner. Whether what happened earlier in the summer didn't help him I don't know. Needs trust.

Ideally would have liked Ngidi back in the test squad for the 2nd test. Whether that is to give KG a rest or replace Olivier but he really needs to be looked after for the world cup.

Yeah sometimes unpredictable things like this happen. You have to put the match beyond teams when you have the upper hand with the bat. That lower order collapse yesterday was costly. India also nearly paid for it in Adelaide when something similar happened to them.

Pretty much. It is why us playing 5 bowlers does not really makes sense.... Philander did get injured which probably did not help. But Philanders injury probably makes the next match selection easier And then it is India and things may be totally different as we rebuild.

Been managed poorly by the coach and captain. Was under bowled in this test match and they should have backed him to win this game. They seem to forget he is their best bowler outside South Africa, and they won’t win test matches away from home with a four man pace attack.

Batting is not good at the moment but we do need consider that majority of our batsmen have been batting in tough conditions, when no batsman has really avged well. But we will go to India with a different batting lineup. Mulder should be playing then and Amla will probably not.

Edit: And de Bruyn has not actually given great confidence either as the next man in line.

Time for Amla, Philander to go. Steyn can continue for a year or so. This is the team we will see post 2019.

Agree with Maharaj not being used enough, especially when you consider how well Embudleniya managed to do. Also, Rabada looked extremely off colour, and has done for a while, but I dont think they can afford to rest him now? Definitely wouldve if they'd managed to hang on and win.

Would be Interesting to see him & Bavuma bat in a series with the rest of the next best batsman. Need to weigh up where a few batsmen who have scored domestic runs are. Some might have runs on the board but not good enough.

Ideally don't want to waste time.

I don't want to comment too much on the bowlers but yes Rabada needs break. It's a testimant to how good he is that he keeps taking wickets even when you can clearly see he isn't at a 100%. I know a few of us liked Gibson saying we want to win the tests this summer 5-0. But we really aren't building a team for the future.
