South Africa team selection

I think part of the problem is they're terrified if they >don't< play Olivier enough he will take a Kolpak deal like Abbot... The ICC really should have nipped such contracts in the bud (since they're actually the opposite of what was intended by the Kolpak ruling (that EU-members or equivalents have the same right to work as local citizens and there can be no cap on foreign-born EU players).

Does kolpak still apply post brexit?
Impossible to know for sure at the moment.... the minute UK gets out from under the european court of justice, then the kolpak ruling itself it no longer effective. However it won't be retroactive. Also the UK will adopt (en masse) many of the EU rulings into their system that may still allow for the recruitment of overseas players. On top of that we don't even know what the deal will be (if any) long term yet and how that will affect the EU courts rulings on matters regards UK law and immigration. etc etc etc. In effect kolpak as it stands will probably not exist but that may not stop players from getting opportunities depending on how UK rules are managed and changed.

But even if they're scared that Olivier might do a runner, it's not like he's irreplaceable. Yes, he's had an amazing summer, but we're not short on bowling talent with Ngidi and Nortje waiting in the wings. Admittedly, it's possible that Nortje has been talked up to more than he'll amount to, but there's no denying that the potential is there, and it's unlikely that South Africa is going to stop producing quality fast bowlers.

So if they're really playing Olivier to ensure that he stays here then I feel that's a bad move as it is to the detriment of the team to weaken the batting just to get him into the side.

As well as Olivier has bowled, he is a very specific type of bowler. Back of length aggressive intimidation. Fantastic in the right conditions, on slower pitches immediately becomes less effective. As said we do have Ngidi, Nortje immediately available and a number of young potentials. Steyn, Rabada can bowl what Olivier bowls plus a whole many more skills. Long run if Olivier stays he will probably only be used occasionally as 4th/5th bowler when needed on the faster greener pitches.

As sad as it is, he is unlikely to be picked often in the long run for SA and thus if he gets an opportunity to make some money and make a better life for himself I would definitely encourage it. Hopefully we can keep him playing on domestic scene though.

Oliver is in the team because he was the best bowler in the recently concluded series against Pakistan. What weakens the batting is not the bowling attack, it’s the batsmen that are picked to bat in the top 6.

I dont think the calls for tembas head will ever stop. Last series he played a critical big knock in each of the first innings. Sealed the series. Best series from anyone in the middle since AB. Even if we had talent knocking on the door, and an elite middle order, he would be safe.

But...
De bruyn is gone. We need to drop a bowler for some batting. Faf and amla could be potentially be retired after this series. Or amla dropped.
Two games from now the entire middle could be playing their first or second game except bavuma... drop him.

Sure. But we need to get 3 new guys with a proven track record averaging in the 40s, plus a potential replacement. We will likely have to try out a number of guys to get three, like de bruyn. Plus we got quota questions after all that. Even if he gets worse, there is a chance we wont be able to replace him within the next year.

I am not calling for him to be replaced at all. He has done well over the last year. Just saying why he is always an easy target.

It will be interesting what happens post faf & amla.

Hamza and de Bruyn are the obvious next in line. After that a number of youngsters have done well. Seconds, Petersen (who looked good the other day in the Momentum cup) Bedingham, Breetzke, Qeshile, Possibility of bringing J. Malan in with Makram moving to 4?... I am unsure when the SA 'A' plays again but that could be a good litmus test of who is next in line.

Second is almost 30, so not really a "youngster". :p

But I agree with you about the A side - the selection for that will be very interesting as it's going to reveal just who the selectors have in mind as candidates for the test team.

Feels like we spend much more time testing out dud openers than with an actual pair. We finally get one that works and want to break it up.

But im in favour, assuming there is a similar level of cobfidence in malan as the middle option.watching de kock and markram brutalise tired old ball bowlers together sounds glorious
