Socceroos and Australian Football

A-League refs, seriously. That ref tonight really was absolutely hopeless. Glory can feel robbed again this season as they were last season IMO. For mine, the league isn't going to get any better with the quality of the refs that are on show week on week.

I'll be reffing my young bloke's home games this year again. Last time I refereed the team they're playing against today, one of the opposition players left the field in tears at my response to his mouthing off at me.

I did some reffing as a teenager (13-14), worst experience. Only did u6s and 7s on the tiny fields. The kids didn't care, they were having a blast running around chasing a ball, the parents were savage though. Expletives galore over throw in calls in front of six year olds.

Absolutely no idea why anyone would want to be a ref, particularly in soccer where there is a culture of crowding and pressuring him. ****ty thankless job.

Was listening to a couple of former league internationals on the radio last night who've covered all kinds of events in Australia and around the world. They said the atmosphere at Parramatta Stadium in the semi was like nothing they'd ever seen or felt in Australia. Just a real intensity apparently. It's good to see some crowds in this country get full on into a sporting contest and happily express it. I always think we're a bit too reserved the way we specatate in Australia, even at massive grand final-type events.

Providing they leave out the flares etc, it should be a cracking atmosphere. And again, what a story the Wanderers are. Five weeks befor ethe season the club had a coach and six players. It's an extraordinary effort, irrespetive of what happens on the weekend.

As someone who has been to 75% of the games at Parra, there might be the occasional unsavoury incident, but overall the crowd and atmosphere has been a truly positive and unique experience for me.

Disappointing the Wanderers couldn't finish their season off in grand style, but well deserved byt he Mariners. Were the better team, and seem a decent bunch of blokes led by a top bloke as coach.

Atmosphere looked flat out incredible.

They were abject. Fairtale season but a very poor performance made the night a bit of a fizzer. They were never in it.

Very good Socceroos squad named for our next three games. Happy to see two Reds lads in the mix too. :)

Nice to see Kennedy back.

If only James Troisi played more games for Altanta. Still would have picked him personally. Even with just one game is six months he is still a better option then Vidosic, Brosque and Thompson against Japan.

Would be nice if Herd was fit. We would have at least one good centre half option that could keep up with the Japanese forwards.

Pretty shows the state of Australian football. Older players on their last legs, struggling for game time. And young guns struggling to establish themselves in first teams and decent leagues.

Decent squad considering the limited options.

A-League All Stars vs Manchester United and Melbourne Victory vs Liverpool to be on Channel 7, for those interested.

Will be at both. :p

Yeah, certainly not he side they were. Mind you, thought they played pretty well give the circumstances last night.

I thought it was a brilliant performance. Japan are almost unstoppable at home, and we almost went away with 3 points. Thought it was close to a perfect away effort.

Hopefully we can open up a bit now at home against some easier opposition.
