Socceroos and Australian Football

Reckon we could be keeping it on the carpet a bit more.
Agreeing with this, haven't scored a goal all tournament from a ball to Cahills head (apart from against India). Obvs it's a danger, but is happening waay too often.

Shame we couldn't have finished it in normal time.

Thought we had significantly the better of the game.

:( 'played Japan.

Goalkeeper saved 'em. Aust really should've finished it in normal time though, much as they should've against Iraq.

Carney is so so frustrating. Wasn't within buckleys of his man for the goal. Australia's Glen Johnson.

Agreed - should've been 2or 3 nil in normal time and 4 or 5 to 1 would've been reasonable

Japan created 1 clear chance and took it brilliantly

Hard lesson

People might talk about how we had more chances, but Japan deserved to win. Quality chances over quantity.

Carney's effort is probably the worst piece of defending I have ever, ever seen. It is absolutely baffling that he would run to the line instead of marking his man. Absolute garbage, and the reason we didn't go to penalties.

No idea why Emerton and Kilkenny were brought on, showed nothing. Both Carney and Emerton had shockers, and they damn well better not start for the Socceroos next game.

Overall, promising signs, but really, could've been the trophy.

Japan continues to rule the Asian Championships -- we've lost just two matches in the last six tournaments. Our problem is that the dominance in Asia isn't translating into results at the WC, and I think that in part is because we get complacent about being the big fish in the small pond.

I thought Australia were disappointing tonight. You guys should have been able to use your height advantage, but Nagatomo and Uchida, our left and right defenders who are both really small, were able to control the flanks, and you never got a chance to exploit your strengths.

Disappointing match overall, I nearly fell asleep.

If anything, this tournament has shown that Australia can produce along the ground. We don't have the quality players to deliver good balls into the box, so being a foot taller is nullified. We got into the final playing good, passing football, but we didn't show enough of it tonight.

Loved the game, personally.

I thought Japan did well at this WC. Lost out to Paraguay only on penalties, after getting out of their group comfortably.

Please

We have guys in the centre who are cumulatively paid hundreds of thousands of pounds per week and they couldnt hit a barn door tonight

Those guys had more than enough chances to put the game away in normal time

Doesn't matter what they're paid, really. Japan had complete control of the midfield.

Our weaknesses are an inability to convert scoring chances and the height deficit in our defense line (also, a failure to understand the offside trap). The teams that take control of us are teams that manage to make the most of their height advantage -- you did it in 2006, so you should know.
