Road to the 2017-18 Ashes in Australia

The only thing I can think of in his favour is he seems to have gotten into the Twenty20 set-up in 2017.

60 runs at 12.00.

“He (Paine) is regarded as the best gloveman in the country...Then of course you go the other side of the coin, the unconvincing performances of the other wicketkeeping contenders.”
That's it, he's regarded?

????????????????????

We just feel Shaun Marsh, in parituclar if we’re going down that path again, has performed much, much better and demanded to be chosen.
And all I can say to that is bullshit (with apologies to James Hunt).

And Smith in the presser says Paine has great presence out there in the field.

Spikey was right, Nevill never stood a chance.

Yep. Pretty much any keeper other than Wade/Paine/Peirson/Inglis should have been considered. FFS Gotch has a better claim to being our premiere keeper than Paine.

Essentially Australia now prefer players who were good at some point in the past to players who are mediocre right now.

It's almost beautiful.

Smith has abandoned all charade of trying to be objective towards players he doesn't like. Baby face my ass.

One more bitch then I'll cool off

'we don't feel it's the ideal venue to inject (the young fellas) in the game into such an important series' - Trevor Hohns

I thought we were past this **** after Mennie, Beer and Rob Quiney. The next test series is overseas in South Africa ffs, miserable failure really isn't an option now is it for this crop?

Never before has the favoritism of Australian selectors/captain been so blatant.

Ed Cowan being dropped from the NSW side.
Paine being recalled for no reason.
Renshaw dropped after being the second top run scorer in India and scoring 184 in his last test on home soil.
Marsh recalled after averaging 40 in the shield, replacing a guy who was averaging 40 in the shield.

The worst thing is that both Maxwell and Tasmania were thrown under the bus for the sale of Paine. Because Bailey was forced to let Paine bat, Maxwell didn't get enough of a chance to really push his case.

But I suspect that the selectors already had it in their minds to drop Maxwell and pick Marsh.

Just recall Beer, Hilfenhaus, Bollinger and Xavier whatshisface and have a 2010-11 dvd highlights set reunion.

Smith has no presence or leadership abilities. Like an adolescent in an oversized suit trying to be the boss of a company. Typical passive/aggressive millineal half wit

From the captain himself

The selection of Tim Paine may have surprised a few people but he’s a man in form.
I sent Tim a congratulatory message on Thursday, letting him know how excited I was to be playing with him again.
And he’s got a bit of mongrel about him as well, which is good too.
I take it back, it all makes sense now.

There's only one true youngster in discussion and that's Renshaw, who's already got some solid performances behind him. Why would you pick Bancroft if that was a concern?

Certainly. Any excuse to shoehorn him in the side.

If we win this series, which we probably will, it will be very much in spite of these selection, not because of them.

It would suck to be Callum Ferguson right now wouldn't it?

Tim Paine last ten FC/LA scores: 71* 0 52 5 12 44 26 38 8 14

Yeah, mediocre form maybe.
