That would be understandable considering how good a batsman Ponting is (did you watch the WC final marc) but what is beyond my grasp is your belief that Vaughan's captaincy is the reason England have managed to beat West Indies. And for the final laugh you think he's a better captain than Ponting.
Really? You're 'aving a larff (as they say in Essex)

Only an idiot would attribute 7 test victories out of 8 games against the West Indies to one man - there have been contributing performances at times by Hoggard, Harmison, Jones (both), Vaughan, Trescothick, Butcher, Flintoff, Thorpe, Hussain, Strauss, Key, Giles and Anderson - I know that we might have to play 14 against the Aussies to give us a chance in the Ashes, but that's not the point.

I'm really surprised that marc would say such a thing (after all, he has been maintaining that cricket is a team game) - and try as I may, I just can't find where he said it. Could you enlighten us, please?

Pretty please?

Please show me where I've said anything other than questioning how we can judge Ponting when there is no real challenge in the side he captains.

And it would be fair to say Vaughan could not lead the Australian side with the same confidence and class as Ponting.
Why not?

I haven't seen anything to say that he wouldn't.

Man, this is some acrimonious thread...eh ! so thought i should chime in a little bit from a neutral standpoint.

There is no reason to look at Vaughan's record against Ponting's in ODIs as he has captained England only in 27 ODIs with a success rate of 51 % which has been the success rate of England in ODIs.So his captaincy hasn't changed anything for better or worse. But he has not captained England in too many ODIs yet and so I would say the jury is still out on him in that respect and no objective comparison with Ponting can be done at this point of his captaincy career.

Ponting on the other hand has captained Aus in quite a lot of ODI matches, 75 to be precise, and has done an extremely admirable job if we look at just the results instead of going into any other nitty gritties of captaincy. His success percentage has been 80 % against an Australian team success rate in ODIs of around 63 %. So things have improved under Ponting's captaincy. But there is a caveat which cannot be ignored. To judge just the role of a captain in the successes of a very successful team with super human players is a tough one, because it can always be argued that the players in the team are so good that its quite easy to be successful even though the captaincy at times has showed signs of being mediocre.Ponting as a batsman is awesome and he does his team job of a batsman very efficiently. As success is what counts, if a comparison is made between Ponting and Vaughan today in ODIs(which is unfair in my opinion) then Ponting wins hands down. Now there can be a lot of argument if Ponting's strategies are better then Vaughan's or vice-versa but that's subjective at best and so remains inconclusive in most cases.

In test matches, Ponting has captained Aus in just 4 matches while Vaughan has done so in 19 matches. And Vaughan has won 13 of them while Ponting has won 3 of them. Vaughan has done a remarkable job. But the comparison is again skewed and unfair for the same reasons which I stated earlier as the jury is still out on Ponting's captaincy abilities in test matches.

The bottomline is you fellas have wasted so much time and effort and peace of mind in this thread over nothing....I really feel sorry for all of you.And I had to come write this long piece to get you kids(LE included) to your senses    ....back to work now.

Hang about...
You've only said what I did.
Vaughan was never an issue - his name was seemingly introduced for flaming purposes only.

Ricky ponting captaincy today was hopeless what else could be said of a captain even thogh he had limitted source wait till 21st over to bring his spin bowler on a track on which english spinners including vaughn had troubled aussies.

superkingdave did you know that Ponting has not been beaten in a final series in the last Eight finals. You probably dont watch finals games but you should because thats where Australia play best.
Well i suppose part of that statement probably holds true, he wont be beaten in this final either :)

You know i think i might just watch this final

i think vaughan troubling people is definatley more bad batting than good bowling

I know this is not on topic, but I didn't think starting a thread for it was worthwhile! haha

What is that model a lot of people have on their desks etc called that has a row of metal balls on string, and when you start one moving at one end it triggers the one at the other end after hitting the row and they move like this for ages?

I'm looking for a picture of it and can't for the life of me remember what it's called.

Thank you, I found Theory of Motion, Newton etc etc, but for the life of me couldn't find it. All this for a lame joke in a giant email back to friends at home that they don't even want! haha
