"Retaining the Trophy"

If the 5th is washed out, I'll happily take 2-1, both retain Ashes and series win.
Win first two Tests away from home is an achievement. (Along with Test World Champs)

Haha.....here's another one thinking Aus best bet to win the series is a washed out test. This really is speaking volumes.

It is mate because they know, as we do, that we are the better team.

Remember all the pre Ashes hype that they would win 5 nil and we wouldn't be able to smack their bowling attack all round the ground. And if we produced flat wickets they would hammer us etc.

But for the rain at Manc land, we'd be 2 all now with us heavy favourites for the decider.

Which team cowardly ordered docile pitches?

Deliberate pitch doctoring to create made to order pitches, which are not typically of the pitch's normal characteristics, is obviously now within the spirit of the game.

Australia can't be happy "retaining" the Ashes in this manner.

An absolute joke of a result for them, and why I think "retaining" the Ashes is a silly concept that needs to go away ASAP.

yeah does feel a bit hollow now. But we’ll see how England go in Australia in a few years. Australia have been plenty competitive in England their last two series there. When England come to Aus they usually get stomped and have a few guys retiring and a few players careers cut short

But it’s well understood that a drawn away series is a very difficult and creditable achievement. Not the same as a win though.
That's why it's 'retained' instead of 'won' though isn't it? It takes a very good away side (or a very, very ordinary home side) to win away, especially if the home team takes full control of all the variables at its disposal.
