Now, we decided earlier to keep this thread (and the parallel thread) clear of Warne-Murali or Lara-Tendulkar debate, so let's stick to that and not clog this up too much.
That was my point. Lara had Amby and Walsh for half of his career, but Sachin has Kumble and other spinners throughout his career (obviously only perform at home, the spinners). So that evens out that argument. But I don't think anyone can negate the fact that Lara had far lesser support in his side as far as batting is concerned than Sachin ever did. Having considered all, I would still rank Lara as the better test player but overall, including ODIs, Sachin has to be ahead because of his phenomenal ODI record, where Lara hasn't been as good as he should have been.

Back to the rankings sans Sachin/Lara debate. :)

In short, this can go on forever and ever. Both played in generally mediocre teams.
IMO, Lara and Tendulkar are pretty much equal; who you rate higher depends on whether you prefer consistency (SRT) or massive scores (BCL).
Good call.

A clever ploy to try to give yourself the last word. ;)

Tendulkar - More consistent, better technique, better bowler, better against pace

Lara - Makes bigger scores, can be more destructive, hits the ball harder and better against spin

In a nutshell.

Yup. Exactly. Different styles. I'd like to have both though in my middle order.

We agree on something, surely not?
Ummm....Lillee is an overrated mediocre pacer who can't bowl on flat tracks and isn't fit to kiss the shoes of real bowlers like McGrath.

Actually I don't rate Lillee that highly. I'd be more offended if you said something like:

"Wilfred Rhodes is a stupid old fool who is only got 4000 FC wickets through fluke and easy pitches, had Glenn McGrath been back in those times he would have easily taken 6000 FC wickets."

Wilfred Rhodes is a stupid old fool who only got 4000 FC wickets through fluke and easy pitches, and no real competition. Had Glenn McGrath been back in those times he would have easily taken 10,000 FC wickets at an average of <10. Not only that, the quality of cricket back in those days makes the U-13 tournaments look like Test calibre cricket.

Dennis tried to kiss McGrath's shoes but complained that they tasted salty and had to suck a mint.

This is a good idea but it's getting a bit confusing, that's probably why the voting is a bit slow. By the time we reach Number 25 the thread will be 5,000 pages long and someone will suddenly realise that they wanted to vote for Colin Cowdrey at Number 17 and we will have to start again.
Anyway here's my Top 5, Just a personal view, not based on averages or anything like that. In fact most people rate Viv in their Top 5 yet his Test Average of 50 doesn't really set him apart.

1. Don Bradman
2. Viv Richards
3. Sachin Tendulkar
4. Barry Richards
5. Garry Sobers

Why is it confusing? Most people that are voting have been voting since the first round and whenever you start voting, you can choose the best of the remaining contenders.
The reason the voting is slow is because all of the votes came in the first 10-15 hours of the 2-day period. Expecting a Richards vote from you soon ...

Maybe it has a bit of Indian bias ;).

Lara.

When you look at the "Battle of the Test Innings" and see how many entries he had in it, and how well a number of them did, estimation of him rises.
