I'd hope that Pant becomes a much more competent keeper than either of those 2
If he became on a par that would do as he can bat very very well. You forget how bad Prior and Bairstow were and that later on you barely noticed their keeping which is a good sign as they aren't making mistakes.

Do you reckon it's harder to turn a great keeper into a very good batsman, or a very good batsman who can't keep into a very good keeper
coaches clearly think it's easier to train someone up to be a serviceable keeper than to train them up to be a serviceable Test-match batsman. That's why we see this trend.

What do England do with Bairstow, Foakes and Buttler? Damn, that's some embarrassment of riches they have in that department.

Alec Stewart would be a good example of that.
The frustrating thing about that one was 1. Russell wasn't exactly a bunny with the bat and 2. Stewart was a much better top-order than middle-order bat. Certainly I don't think that would've happened today, funnily enough.

serviceable keeper, yes. But very good keeper?

Keeping must be hard at that level, because you see guys who keep regularly because they have to (eg. Andy Flower) but still never really became much good at it.

Depends on who you are keeping to as well. Some keepers who are regarded as good to very good (e.g. Stewart, let's say) go their entire careers without having to keep for bowlers like Warne. Keepers who keep to pedestrian bowling attacks will invariably make fewer mistakes than those who have to keep against really mercurial attacks, which can lead to a skewed perspective as to their ability.

In my opinion there's nothing better than over-rating Ian Harvey. I like to do it as often as possible. Soothes the soul.

Yeh, I'd be pretty confident I could keep to Phil DeFraitas, Gladstone Small and Angus Fraser pretty comfortably all day.

Angus Fraser was a genuinely great bowler though. If you're only implying he's slow, then I suppose McGrath wouldn't have been too hard to keep to.

Yeah, wouldn't it be harder to keep for a **** team than a good one? Like, someone rapid spearing one wide down leg every two overs would not make life easy, whereas an super consistent bowler doesn't require that degree of movement.

Guess it's a physical challenge vs mental challenge thing, almost. Could see the same thing that got Nasser in that classic McGrath over leading to complacency from the 'keeper in a similar way.

For any club level keeper the hardest challenge would be spinners, especially the ones quicker through the air. Would be a lot harder in LOs as well when they’re mixing up pace and lengths.

Leg spinners are the most difficult to keep to. Erratic quicks can be tough but there’s not much you can do to reach what you can’t reach
