How the hell does it flatter him? He reached number 1 in the rankings and is miles better than Hoggard who averages 30 and gets all the best bowling conditions (new ball, bit of movement in the pitch and so on, hardly ever does the donkey work like Harmison and Flintoff regularly do).
He reached number 1 in the rankings thanks to a thoroughly spineless effort by WI. The bowlers who have made things happen for England all the way since August is Flintoff and Simon Jones, while Harmy runs in, bowls fast, and nothing else - a bit like Lee.

can't say i dis-agree with you there,i've allways said Harmison gets more credit than he deserves.

Perhaps it's the fact that he's only managed to average under 30 in four series in his career against teams other than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, and three of those were consecutive against the West Indies (twice) and New Zealand. He's a woefully inconsistent bowler, and if he continues to have absolutely awful series thrown in on a regular basis througout his career it's unlikely he'll manage a low average. You can't rely on him taking 7/12 on his on-days to keep it low all the time.

I agree - woefully inconsistent.

Justin Langer didn't know which bit would get hit next.

And in 2005, Giles averaged 56.94. He hardly had any chances missed off him, unless you count all the times Warne was dropped in the crowd.
No, I've rewatched two of the Ashes matches (got some DVDs for Crimbo) and I've already counted 3.

Well you can add 3 wickets already, and going by Jones' 'keeping you can add a few more once I've watched the remainder, so it'd bring it back down less than 50 quite comfortably.

you can't dis-count every missed chance, all bowlers have had batsman dropped.

Ok,he still would have an 'above-average' average.

He wasn't brilliant in The Ashes, but still got some hugely influential wickets and didn't get the benefit of the prime bowling conditions in the last Test when Australia lost 9 wickets for not many to improve his figures. So not bad there then. Pakistan pitches were very batsmen friendly and Harmison bowled more overs than anyone on the last Test road, so certainly not bad there either. The rest of the series bar one he averages below 30. So unless you've got some weird definition of bad then it's pretty clear there's only one bad series there.

Hayden played below average
Clarke played below average
Martyn played below average
Katich played below average

I'm not trying to rubbish Giles, but he still has a pretty bad average even for a finger spinner

You can make all the alterations you want,he still isn't as good as most people say he is.

Hmm, so you really think he could've bowled in the same manner that Flintoff and co did then?

Hayden had a serious technical fault exposed which he has only just now corrected.

Katich was shown up as someone who had ridden on the backs of the other batsmen and fell to pieces when under real pressure.

Clarke was impatient, was exposed against good swing bowling and needed more time to mature into the class-batsmen he will be someday, was unlucky with the injury.

Martyn was seriously out of form and needs more time back in the domestic game.

Hayden got found out.
Clarke is below average (for now at least, he's a real prospect though).
Martyn played below average.
Katich played several important innings before being sawn off by umpires etc.

Martyn was unlucky with decisions too, but never really got going.
