You think Murali will finish his career with an average of 20 AND also think Warne is better? Even in 2005, a really great year for the Australian showman, he still averaged well over 20. And as I have said before it is much easier to average less in a good team.

Speaking of Gilo, what do people think he'll end up with? Will he break that 40 mark? :-O
Yes. Giles was actually very unlucky in The Ashes, a number of misses off him (mainly by that idiot behind the stumps), and was hampered in Pakistan by injury. In 2004, Giles averaged 30. IMO he's a much improved bowler.

Murali is only going to play minnows more and more, and his average is still coming down as a result (though I've not studied this too carefully). That's my reasoning.

Lol. Only you AMZ, could bring a Murali/Warne argument (or at least something which may result in one) into this thread. I specifically left out Warne partly because of that reason. Also because he and McGrath IMO are nearing the end and probably will retire soon.

Its plausible, and I'm guessing this is why Tom reckons his average will fall to 20, that Murali will average so incredibly low if SL continue to play a lot against Ban/Zim. *shrugs*

Edit: And after reading Tom's earlier post, that was the case.

You see, I also was very surprised at Jayawardene's average. But the way I see it, he's averaged that for so long, and I don't see him dwindling any time soon actually. Whether it be minnow bashing, or scoring really well and then going into periods of low scores which is holding his average high, he's going to get better with maturity IMO. I reckon he'll keep it if not improve a little. Maybe I'm wrong though *shrugs*
Fair enough, but to me he seems like the type of player who is perfectly happy to pile up runs when the team is in a good position or in comfortable, familiar surroundings, but when the chips are down in a foreign soil he rarely has any impact. And the figures bare this out too.

home 43 66 5 3461 242 56.73 10 17
away 31 54 4 1845 141 36.90 3 10

matches won 29 41 5 2083 167 57.86 6 10 2
matches lost 24 48 0 1536 104 32.00 2 10 3

But I guess if he can pile on the runs when things suit him, his average will hide the aforementioned weakness.

It's a very interesting idea (I do love a stat, me :D ), so much so I'm surprised no-one had thought of it before!

I reckon it's a more-or-less impossible task tho because it's dependent on so many variables. I mean, just over a year ago Hayden was averaging something like 62 & after the 2002/03 Ashes Vaughan was over 50 too.

Freddie is certainly not a 31-and-a-half average bowler on current form so should lower it if his body holds together, but coupled against that he does have a huge heart & all-rounders of his ilk are very few & far between, so he could go on past his peak (a la Beefy) & have his final analysis reduced because of it. My feeling is his average may fall below 30 by the end of our summer if he stays fit.

Unfortunately (for him) I suspect B Lee's average will remain pretty static. He was pretty magnificent against SA in the 1st innings of the 2nd test & still ended up with 3/92 (IIRC). I think it's partly the nature of his bowling in as much as at his pace edges go a long way & partly because he's a stout-hearted lad who will bowl all day. Ahktar is the only test player of similar pace just now (& whilst a better test bowler) tends to not play when he doesn't fancy it.

As for the ***tet of best batters (Sachin, Lara, Dravid, Inzi, Punter, Kallis) I think Kallis will probably end up with the highest average because he's the youngest of the 6 & (crucially) seems to most concerned about maintaining it too!

Finally, I don't see Fat Gray as a 50+ average batsmen, but if he moves himself down to five every time the new ball starts to swing who knows?! ;)

And in 2005, Giles averaged 56.94. He hardly had any chances missed off him, unless you count all the times Warne was dropped in the crowd.

Hahah Halsey, why bring up a previous year to support your claim he was an improved bowler? Scaly piscine saves the day.

That was not the intention and I can only apologise, the temptation just became too great. :p

Virender Sehwag (Current Average: 53.55): 54 - static
Michael Vaughan (Current Average: 42.94): 40 - down a wee bit
Marcus Trescothick (Current Average: 45.47): 48 - up 3
Inzamam Ul Haq (Current Average: 51.61): 52 - static
Shahid Afridi (Current Average: 35.83): 39 - up 4, assuming he gets a decent run
Graeme Smith (Current Average: 52.72): 47 - down 5, he hasn't had a decent knock since he was dropped on 8 by Nasser... :p
Jaques Kallis (Current Average: 56.45): 57 - static, not much time to change it
Stephen Fleming (Current Average: 39.03): 40 - again, played too many Tests
Jacob Oram (Current Average: 43.57): 36 - down 7, there's a reason why he's batted at 7 or 8 for NZ
Kumar Sangakkara (Current Average: 46.61): 44 - down 2, form slump continuing
Mahela Jayawardene (Current Average: 47.80): 48 - static, I s'pose
Chris Gayle (Current Average: 38.79): 40 - if Afridi manages 39...
Shivnarine Chanderpaul (Current Average: 45.94): 48 - up 2, assuming someone else becomes captain

Bowlers:
Brett Lee (Current Average: 31.85): 32 - static, per BB
Stuart MacGill (Current Average: 27.82): 28 - will be carefully shuffled away after SA
Irfan Pathan (Current Average: 26.14): 25 - huge talent, and will only bowl when he's needed because of the spinners
Harbhajan Singh (Current Average: 27.88): 28 - static
Andrew Flintoff (Current Average: 31.52): 29 - can't have one of the best seamers in the world averaging above 30
Stephen Harmison (Current Average: 28.72): 32 - average certainly flatters him
Shoaib Akhtar (Current Average: 24.76): 24 - still seems to be going strong
Danish Kaneria (Current Average: 30.56): 27 - down 4, spinners only get better
Makhaya Ntini (Current Average: 29.22): 27 - down 2, although I'm worried about his tendency to go 4-30 in one spell and then 0 for lots in the rest of the match
Shaun Pollock (Current Average: 22.40): 23 - has to retire soon
Shane Bond (Current Average: 20.80): 25 - up 4, he simply isn't THAT good, nobody is these days
Daniel Vettori (Current Average: 34.84): 33 - down 2
Murali (Current Average: 22.40): 22.5 - steady
Chaminda Vaas (Current Average: 28.73): 28 - seamers in SL have it tough
Dwayne Bravo (Current Average: 33.11): 27 - only bowler in WI who's capable of doing things
Corey Collymore (Current Average: 31.37): 32 - lacks pace

To finish with a career average of 28 Vettori is going to have to average around 20 for the rest of his career, but for almost two years between 2002 and 2004 his figure was around the 70 mark.

If Vettori averages 28 in his career I will eat my computer.
Richard once said that.

I think it choked him.

How the hell does it flatter him? He reached number 1 in the rankings and is significantly better than Hoggard who averages 30 and gets all the best bowling conditions (new ball, bit of movement in the pitch and so on, hardly ever does the donkey work like Harmison and Flintoff regularly do).
