Overrated/Underrated

Strauss' performances in the Ashes did show that he struggled against spin, but it also showed that he has some heart and the willpower to fight tough situations out when necessary. He managed to also get himself out of a rut (even though it was only temporarily) during the Indian series which was vital to England drawing the series. I'd say he's slightly overrated, but he's shown a lot recently. More than he showed when he was belting around the South Africans anyway.

extremely underrated in ODIs and is probably one of the best lower order batsmen in the world at the moment, not to mention one of the most versatile players in ODi cricket. im a firm believer that versatile players are invaluable in ODI cricket because they can bat in almost any position and are extremely useful to any side.
overrated in tests though, and its arguable as to whether he deserves a place in the side.

Andrew Strauss

i think strauss is always likely to fail against any bowling attack that actually bowls well, and is likely to punish a poor bowling attack. his introduction to test match cricket, basically his entire first year, involved facing bowling attacks that constantly bowled towards his strengths rather than pitching the ball up to him and letting it swing(not to mention the lack of a quality spinner in any of those sides). I think Strauss will have the odd good game here and there and a the odd good series, but i dont see him succeeding consistently. I think at the moment, i like the look of Cook(based on the very little that we've seen from him) better than Strauss because i think he makes a better complement to Trescothick and the rest of the England side.

Over rated. Except THAT performance in India, he has not done too much of note. But is a very handy batsman though. Plus, even that series where he did brilliantly well in INdia is under the match fixing cloud.
does anyone even rate him? the only reason he plays so often is because it appears as though SA have a major crisis in terms of spin bowling, have they ever even had a quality spinner before?
perhaps they should look more into the preparation of the wickets in domestic cricket.

Couldnt be more underrated, i'd put him down as the 2nd best all rounder of the 90s marginally behind Cairns especially when you consider his exceptional fielding skills at slip.

Underrated. Average of close to 30 for a spinner is very good, unlucky not to have had more international cricket.

Rated about right for the most part - very mediocre, but with a lot of potential to be a very good bowler. As of late, he's probably under-rated by those who haven't seen him bowl this year. He's found some impressive control and consistency.

Possibly over-rated by Dwayne Smith? Don't think the rest of us are fooled though.

Rated Right in test cricket.
Extremely underrated in ODI cricket. Very good average of 45 and good strike rate of close to 80.

Van Troost was exceptionally quick, but lacked control. I'd say rated about right by those who know who he was. And I only did because he played for Somerset when I was a kid and I liked the fact he was from Holland.

Guy Whittall and/or Doug Marillier

Doug Marillier - under-rated, certaintly who you want when you need 23 to win off 2 overs in a One Day International, as testament doing a similar thing against India in 2000 (?) and nearly doing it to Australia in Perth in 2001 (Glenn McGrath won't forget).

Slightly overrated. He was a fairly mediocre batsman, though a handy bowler.

Whatever it takes!!!
under rated. The knocks I saw him play suggested that he was a top quality performer who sorta fizzled out for no real plausible reason.

I actually think Parbhakar was slightly underrated. Perhaps a bit lacking in mental toughness since he was never able to recover from the destruction Jayasuria levied on him during the 96 WC.

Simon O'Donnell didn't play much test cricket so I will only comment on him as an ODI player.
Underrated - Handy bowler who batted well in the lower middle order.
