Underrated, I feel. Definately better than an average of 32 & 31. His batting is probably rated right - very handy and can save matches...

Mark Butcher (can't remember him being mentioned)

i think the Lankan players who aren't as recognized in oz are very underated

for instance Mahela Jayawardene...averages 47 or sometihng with 4000+ runs and will be the future captain of Sri Lanka (currently captaining against Eng)
has also hit two test tons at Lords... and is the first Lankan to hit 1000test runs against England

another is Sangakkara... i think he would have to be level with gilly...can't say ones better than the other coz they have completely diff roles... but as a batsman alone he's prolly up there with the rest... not to mention he keeps to Murali on dustbowls

and yea what Dizz has done in the past is very underated...

Overated would be Afridi definately and Sami and altho hes young Penasar has gotten big wraps already ... altho i think hes better than giles

I suppose he has to be considered under-rated especially after he got back into the team in 2001.

Are you serious man? He was an excellent batsman and captain during an era of very good bowling.
I don't think you understand the way the thread works. You post a reply of overrated/ underrated to the previous post and then post another name for the next person to comment on whether they think he is overrated or underrated.

In my case I was saying that Wiseman was overrated and posting Mark Taylor for the next person to comment on.

I guarantee you that Sangakkara is very highly rated here in Australia. The fact is, if you perform in Australia (Which Sanga has done: Super Series and VB Series) you are immediately rated by Australian cricket fans beyond comprehension. You can fail almost everywhere else, but if you perform on Australian shores you're a gun ;)

VVS' standing there is the perfect proof, isn't it?
Yeah but in fairness to Aussies, Laxman has spanked the Aussie team so many times at home and away against all of the best bowlers they possess. It would be hard for the Aussie on the street not to be impressed. I mean, he's hit 4 of his 9 Test tons and a 90 against them! I saw most of his 167 in Sydney, I was at the ground for his 148 in Adelaide and saw most of the 281 and seriously, it's difficult to imagine batting being any better. His failures elsewhere are just, well, weird!

I am a big fan of him as well. But he just came to my mind when I saw this topic. But I agree, I think he is a class player and I don't think he is over rated by the Aussies at all.

bowling and batting =P
Rated right - One of the greatest fast bowlers of all time and gets the recognition he deserves. As a batsman perhaps slightly underrated.

Yuvraj, judging on his career as a whole, has been overrated. However, he's still young, and the last 6-12 months seem to signal that he's now reaching his potential.

Underrated - a test batting average close to 40, bowling average under 35 and more catches than matches in test cricket. Perhaps didn't convert enough fifties to hundreds but a good all-round cricketer.

Over rated. Except THAT performance in India, he has not done too much of note. But is a very handy batsman though. Plus, even that series where he did brilliantly well in INdia is under the match fixing cloud.

Thought I'd say I think Andrew Strauss is really overrated. When he came onto the scene he scored a couple of big scores and it took his average to around 50, but it was obvious watching him that his average would go down.

For me, Tresco was better by quite a distance. Tresco's the real deal, Strauss has room for improvment.

Interesting view re Tresco > Strauss.
I know what you mean about Strauss, and I think the next 9 months will tell us a great deal about him. Judging by the Ashes, he should do OK - initially really struggled but recovered to take two 100's off Warne & McGrath. tbf, he was never going to maintain his average at the end of the SA tour, and I don't recall to many folks suggesting it put him on a par with Pollock, Sutcliffe, etc..
