Pretty much yeah it is.
Can't help but laugh at your appalling analogy.

Draw = no win, no loss.
Gold = win!

2 people get gold = both win from a whole field of athletes. Thus both winners. Both get their own separate gold medal. Both go down as olympic champions.

Is it a win if you have to smile with another as equals as opposed to two others who have that 'i have to smile even though I lost' smile?
Dunno but once you're off the podium who gives a ****? And you're more likely to be remembered as "guy who shared gold" than "single winner of random event no one watches"

If the mat is sunken, then the same way. As it is the measurements are ****ed. You measure from the front disturbance but how much is blowback? We have modern equipment that should do this rather than a pointy stick.

Put javelins in the heels of their shoes and get them jumping into the grassed area.

I'm sure modern technology would find a way
Don't think athletics would have the kinda money to put that type of technology into use at all levels even if it existed.

I mean they still fasten number bibs on themselves with safety pins at Olympic level.

Ok. Here is cheap ****. Mat in the ground. You have a resin on surface. Your landing is marked on the mat. Wipe it out for next guy.

I don't care...I just want to see the somersault. I mean, if high jump can do a backflip, why can't long jump get all fancy.

Do you know what a backflip is?

Gonna be honest and maybe this is just the American in me which can't accept anything more than excellence, unlike the rest of you low T European / Oceania countries ( :p ), but for me if you're sharing a gold you know you haven't actually "won" gold, you've decided to split the pot. It's clearly not the same high in the moment, regardless of what material the actual medal is, and what you tell yourself and the misses before going to bed each night.

iirc the Golds are made of Silver anyway

Absolute **** take.
I'm fact the event should be required in these situations to saw the gold medal in half. Also place a pretty pink bow on each half, with the message "Isn't sharing fun?"

Also, whoever places after the co winners should get a bronze, not a silver, because they got 3rd, not 2nd. But unfortunately we live in a less than ideal world.

FYI the medal sharing and subsequent silver medal thing has nothing to do modern participation medal culture etc.

It goes back to the earlier days of athletics when they judged winners in races with the eye and frequently couldn't tell close finishers apart

In Horse Racing, if there's a dead heat, the two winners split the first and second pot. So really they should get half a gold and half a silver each.

I do think joint golds is a bit of a farce.
