*Official* Yorkshire CCC racism crisis thread

The normal awards that everyone else has
Genuine question.

Why is P**i considered offensive.

Does it have historical connotations like n****r that I’m not aware of?

Seems very similar to “Aussie”, and I genuinely didn’t realise until this thread that some people find it offensive.

It’s been used as a slur in the UK for decades now. There used to be a “****-Bashing” movement in the 70s/80s apparently where Pakistanis and South Asians and their businesses were targets of violence. I imagine this would be around where it turned from a short form to a slur.

Not sure but it may be similar to the use of “Abo” in Australia.

Indeed, it's an offensive term given to practically everyone of Asian descent by bigots, and it's known that it is by pretty much everyone that has spent time here, the fact Rafiq was born in Pakistan was almost certainly incidental, it's just a nasty insult used bt nasty people.

Leaving aside the historical racist connotations, I'm wondering how bad it is to just lump in everyone from that area of the world as being from Pakistan.

Given the people who actually abuse like this are ignorant, bigoted ****s…lazy stereotyping like that is right in their wheelhouse…

It is kinda an interesting point, I don't really know why, there are plenty that work at my place, most are Indian, a couple of Bangladeshi, no Pakistani's, have to say I can't be sure on that as there are a lot of employees, and I don't ask them all there nationality, maybe in the past there was a high percentage of Pakistani's that came over?

People do it in Singapore too. The blue collar labourers that come from South Asia are often called “Bangla workers”.

Only found this out when I joined CW tbh. Wasn’t used in a derogatory way here. Haven’t used the term since I became aware, naturally

Whatever it takes!!!
I think it is pretty contextual to the UK and few other regions too. I dont think it is like an universal slur word or anything coz it is used in a way to denote people from Pakistan in other regions, without the context and history of what it meant in the UK.

Yeah same but there are certainly ethnic slurs used here casually (esp in Sydney, would suspect in Melbourne too) that are analogous
Mate of mine went travelling to Oz after university. He was a decent footballer at a local level and always looked to get a game wherever he pitched up.

This was mid/late 90s, so a good while ago now, but he reckoned association football was commonly referred to as "wogball".

That was pretty jarring to English ears, as it'd be only a couple of degrees short of calling it n-wordball up here.

Wog in fairness is interpreted here as being much less bad of a slur than the n-word, or what the p-word is in England. Still doesn't make it right.

I don't think people call soccer/association football/etc. wogball here anymore, but it definitely isn't that much of a shock that is used.

But yes, I think Australians are pretty bad when it comes using racial slurs. I know I have at times.

It's worse than that mate (or was) there was actually a book published in Aus about football titled "sheilas, wogs and poofters"

That was Aus in the 90's though. Not sure that could happen today, but then again Yorkshire CCC.......mind blown that this could even be a thing in today's world.

Yeah I remember Warne using the P-word on sky during one of his earlier commentary outings and clearly he’d done it completely innocently. I presume someone had a quiet word.
