*Official* Yorkshire CCC racism crisis thread

The normal awards that everyone else has
Mate of mine went travelling to Oz after university. He was a decent footballer at a local level and always looked to get a game wherever he pitched up.

This was mid/late 90s, so a good while ago now, but he reckoned association football was commonly referred to as "wogball".

That was pretty jarring to English ears, as it'd be only a couple of degrees short of calling it n-wordball up here.
“Wog” isn’t really used as a slur here, at least in my experience. It’s far more akin to “Pom” than “n*****r”.

It’s pretty well embraced by the Greek and Italian people. It might be less acceptable now but in the 1990s and 2000s it was commonly used in a fun and non derogatory way by everyone. Plenty of Greek/Italian comedians made bulk cash playing on the word and the stereotype.

Australians really embraced immigrants from Italy and Greece in the middle of the 20th century and part of that was always taking the piss. I’m sure it was used badly sometimes, but overall wog wasn’t used in a really derogatory way.

"wog" means something different in the UK........

hence why it was likely jarring

Yeh fair enough. I just read the wiki page for wog and it does a good job explaining the differences

Definitely not a thing stateside btw. I still remember my first email address ever was proud****@yahoo, it never raised an eyebrow except my dad calling me an idiot.
In university in the U.S., my Pakistani friends definitely used the term to refer to themselves (and I think unironically so, without thinking of it as a slur). I think the historical context is nonexistent.

Now that I live in the U.K., it is clear it is basically analogous to the n word given the historical context.

I probably have some sympathy for Gary Ballance who didn't grow up here, and may not have known the context. But his apology was weak at best.

Lol, I'm sure it would have been pretty clear what the context was to anyone who's lived in the UK for more than about five minutes. I didn't even visit the UK til I was 20, and I knew what the word meant over there when i was about 14 just from reading posts about it on a football forum.

He might have thought he was doing it as a joke without realising it was being internalised a different way but it wasn't because he didn't know the context. No one's that obtuse.

I think this was probably the case, at least the understanding I got from his statements.

Head coach Andrew Gale has been suspended over historic tweets.
Seems to have gone down the well trodden but credulity stretching Wayne Hennessy route signposted "I didn't know it was offensive, guv".

He's got previous for this too, hasn't he?

He referred to Ashwell Prince as a kolpak; not racist, although the rest of what he said was pretty charmless.

So you can put someone like Ollie Robinson in a different bucket. They tweet something when they are a kid, it comes to light when they’re older and they pay the price. Whether you think it’s right or wrong, the logic is there.

Gale was already a public figure back then. So what does suspending him now really say about the organisation?

Kind of symptomatic of the whole culture that appears to be in place at YCCC

Whatever it takes!!!
David Warner as the hero who stood up to racist taunts when punching Joe Root would be hilarious.

But I dont expect any dirt to come out on any current England player. Its way too much to lose for ECB.

Personally find it pretty hard to believe an insipid blancmange like Joe Root would be a racist, but then again life is full of surprises I suppose.
i don't have proof and only a hunch. and what i say can obviously be applied to anyone that you look into with tinted glasses looking for smoke but this did happen:

“From my point of view, I just want my friend to be OK,” said Root. “Anyone who knows Ben, he always puts other people first. Now is an opportunity for him to put himself first, to take time to look after himself and get to a good place again. Hopefully, that can be sooner rather than later.

“Moeen has chosen to go home. It’s obviously been a very tricky tour for him. As mentioned at the start, if players feel like they need to get out of the bubble, then that’s been an option. With Moeen it wasn’t more asking if he wanted to stay, it was a decision he had chosen,” Root said at the time.

and then warner said he punched him because he was wearing a wig as a beard and carrying on in a racist way. its ****ing warner's words but still lmao

would be ****ing awesome if he cops a ban just as he has making 50s into hundreds for once

It is well known that young Root was very much a mouthy little prick

But if he was a mouthy little racist prick or not is a different question entirely

Only found this out when I joined CW tbh. Wasn’t used in a derogatory way here. Haven’t used the term since I became aware, naturally
yeah same here, i used it once on here several years back, was just referring to pakistanis in general but some brits were shocked by it, they explained the negative connotation and i stopped using it...
