*Official* World Test Championship Final at The Oval – June 7–11, 2023

I like to see Watto talked up because I think he was a better cricketer than he is sometimes given credit for
I agree, but I do find it really difficult decide quite how I rate Watson as a test cricketer. I can't take his averages at face value to judge him as an all-rounder because of how often he wasn't/was barely bowling, plus I can never quite work out where to draw the line on crediting him for being a relatively consistent scorer despite a middling batting average, or marking him down for so, so many wasted starts.

Yeah that's fair - he is definitely frustratingly difficult to assess as a batsman. So much talent there, and as you say a consistently productive runscorer who just kept finding ways to not go on with the job.

Yeah he’s a tough player to mark across the usual sort of metrics

How to assess Watto?? If in doubt ask an expert:

So he's admitting to cheating? Adds him to the list of former captain, vice captain and all the seamers.
Steady on mate - surely you're not suggesting that all the Aussie players knew that the naughty little scamp 'Davey Warner' was taking sandpaper on to the field to alter the state of the ball.

And when the TV producers cottoned on to that, he suggested that perhaps Cameron Bankcroft should take on the role, without a hint of a senior more powerful player, intimidating and bullying a more junior team mate.

I mean how could the bowlers know that the unusual looking marks on the ball weren't due to natural wear and tear due to hard outfields.

Next you'll be saying that fair dinkum, good bloke, Aussie coach Darren Lehman knew.

I mean how could he - he was only the coach and spent countless hours in and around the squad - how's he supposed to know what his players are up to.

I mean what's suspicious about a senior player having more sandpaper in his bag than B&Q have on their shelves.

Shame on you mate.

Mate, if David Warner wants to do a bit of woodwork while he's on tour, who are you to judge him? Some cricketers want to come home from an overseas tour having both performed well and with a beautifully designed wooden feature they can put on their mantlepiece.

Australia has been fined 80% and India 100% of their match fees for slow over rates. Maybe a bit less milling around is in order next time.

Gill fined 15% on top of that (not sure how that works) for his social media posts, which IMO is very light.

Rahane will play 100 tests. Just 17 left. You can’t stop destiny.
He is averaging 38.96. If he plays 100 or more it will be interesting to see if he can get his average over 40. Fleming managed it in his final (111th) test.

So far Atherton is the only* specialist batsman member of the 100 club who averages under 40.

Hooper was often picked as an allrounder and McCullum and Stewart as keepers.
