Holy ****

My relationship with cricket has been so ****ing weird through the past five or six years. I've found a career I truly love which takes up most of my brain power, barely any of my current friends watch it, but somehow I keep coming back to you *****, who I consider my cricket family.

After staying up for the world cup final I was almost certain I'd never come that close to seeing NZ lifting a trophy again, and it really broke my cricketing heart. I didn't stay up for any of the days play because I was so sure some bullshit was going to **** things up at the last second. I'm so ****ing glad I was wrong and I've never been more proud to be an NZ cricket fan. As much as we bitch about the 'scrappy little underdogs' tag, it truly is a minor miracle that we've produced a team of this quality from our tiny population.

**** the few ***** in the crowd, most of us are so happy to see NZ win. A truly likeable side, but one that you would not want to come up against at the moment.

It is so satisfying to see such an accomplished team completely peak at the right moment. It's a side with no true holes.

If I was a NZ fan I would just enjoy these years, you'll rue them when they're gone.

When do you next play Aus? I desperately want to see you cane them.

It was really surprising (and nice) of Virat to say the WTC was important after losing while he kept saying it was just another test during the build up. I have often said this, but for a guy who is said to be so arrogant and self centered or whatever, he is genuinely gracious so many times in post match interviews and when talking about his opponents and competitors.
Dude is gracious and humble, married his sweetheart and is a vegan.

As far as I'm aware, he's never had any drunken scandals or moments of disrepute. Dude has a reputation for arrogance apparently purely because he has a well maintained beard and tattoos. It's bizarre.

Not Terrible
I started to fall asleep around the 3rd session with the TV on. I have work this morning.

I was drifting in and out through that final session and it felt like a dream. Latham and Conway blunting the new ball, then Latham wasn't there anymore. Next I see Ross and Kane are together, I open my eyes again and they're both in the 40s and I know we've won.

I should feel tired. But I'm on ****ing cloud 9.

I've watched many, many NZ Test matches over the years. I've been to every Basin Reserve Test Match since 2006, away games in England in '94, '99, '04 and '15. Plenty of other Test matches across NZ. I've seen many of this current crop of players plying their trade in domestic cricket before making it internationally. I've seen some atrocious lows and some highs.

The only thing that comes close is the Eden Park semi-final win against South Africa. The feeling of euphoria in that moment outweighs that of this final. However, that euphoria was fleeting whereas the warm, fuzzy sensation from this sensational victory will hopefully linger for considerably longer. This is the culmination of a long period of unprecedented success for our Test team with a great crop of a significant number of players who would arguably make our all time XI already. What more could a Test fan ask for than having such a pleasurable group of players to watch.

The quality on display in this Test was also fabulous. Both teams make the quality of the game.

I think I said before the Test that having a one off test in "neutral territory" probably wasn't satisfactory. I'll stick by that, even though NZ have walked away with the trophy. This first iteration of the WTC has been somewhat experimental. Despite that, it has worked better than I'd anticipated and (hopefully) with some refinements, this can become a beacon for the ongoing value of Test cricket. Fingers crossed.

Oh. And  Ross Taylor. WAG.

Congrats to NZ and their fans. A quality outfit well led. Really happy for Ross Taylor in particular. Just seems a good, good man, and such a stalwart for so long.

For the Kiwi fans, soak it up guys. A genuinely fine achievement, and one you should revel in. Feels appropriate after your side was shafted in the WC final. Glad the cricketing gods are smiling on them now.

Kudos to India for playing positively in the third dig which made a game of it, and to their fans on here who helped make the thread a quality read over the month and a half the match was played.
