Ed Smith when he announced the squad said he was expecting Denly to bat 3, but also added that coach and captain would get final say on that.

Edit: @wpdavid/Pothas

Thanks RIS.

The latest rumour is that Broad will miss out and England will go with Anderson, Wood and Archer.

Would the skipper use both Archer and Wood in short sharp 4 over spells do you think?

Places a big workload on the other bowlers potentially.

I prefer the the idea of one of them playing, at home anyway. We will probably just go and make Archer bowl a million overs again though.

Probably not the decision I’d have made but Wood exceeded all my expectations in SA so I’m hopeful he will again.

According to the met office website today and tomorrow it’ll probably rain before play, so we might get a delayed start, but not long sections of play missed.

God I hope there's like 3 wickets in the first 10 minutes of play or something. So keen for this.

Vic Marks points out that if England’s attack is Anderson, Archer, Bess and Wood, all four of them took a five wicket haul in their most recent test.

Seem out of the loop on this one - how is Woakes behind Wood in the pecking order? Wouldn't he be better in England?

That has been true of them so far, but I think Wood jumped him in the pecking order since he started bowling faster (and better generally) about 18 months ago after changing his run up. He's yet to play a home Test since then. In fact, he's only played 3 Tests in that time, plus obviously the World Cup last year.

I'm a big fan of Woakes, but I can see the 'higher ceiling' argument for Wood.

The weather doesn’t look too promising. It’s slightly ironic that in April when the season normally starts in dank conditions the weather was hotter than it normally is in mid summer.

Rules: No changes.

It's quite hard to spend all your points as so many of the players are rated 'D' or 'E', curiously.
