Whatever it takes!!!
No, I meant 2 years ago or whenever it was, won't Jadeja or Ashwin been in the top 2 allrounders? Or was it Holder - Shakib then?

^that dismisses my claim.
Thanks for the link Howe.

Now going back to the question, it could might as well be Allrounders from the 1980s

My best guess was Shakib vs Vettori, but before 2012 it's really hard to find a date that Kallis wasn't the #1 ranked allrounder. Kallis only ever captained a few tests, all against Ricky Ponting.

Hadlee never captained, Botham only ever captained against Clive Lloyd, Greg Chappell and Kim Hughes.

Kapil Dev vs Imran as captains happened from 1983-87, and Kapil Dev's peak ranking as an allrounder was #3 in those years - so it's close, but it's not quite there.

found it.. In 1987 when Ind-Pak played a series, Imran was #2 and Kapil #4. That is the closest I guess.

EDIT: I meant I found the ICC site to use for the rankings when I said "found it".

Man this is such a rabbit hole with so many near misses. When Pakistan toured England in 1974, Tony Grieg and Mushtaq Mohammed were the #1 and #2 ranked allrounders in the world... but Mohammed wouldn't take over the Pakistan captaincy until the next year. The Pakistan captain was Intikhab Alam, who was the #4 ranked allrounder in the world.

Yeah the 1986 India Pak had Kapil as the #4 allrounder (not sure of exact dates but at a guess) and Ravi Shastri as the #5 allrounder. I think he also led India in a test once may not be in that period though.
