I don't like the ODI wide rule, but they're too generous in tests and that first one should have been a wide as well. Agree with Bishop that, if the wind is as he says, the bowlers are at the wrong ends.
Even if the WI considered resting someone, I suppose they don't want to ease up whilst they're ahead. It's a pretty big assumption to make that he could get through 3 tests in a row given his recent injury record, and the lack of matchplay before this series.
Will be interesting to see if Windies get through this series without resting or any bowlers breaking down.
So why drop him from his home ground test where he has a bowling average under 22? Just ridiculous. It's a pretty big assumption to make that he could get through 3 tests in a row given his recent injury record, and the lack of matchplay before this series.

that's night and day. what are the dates? Was about to talk up his improvement too....
First 24 Tests = 53 @ 37.11 S/R 64.8
Next 23 Tests = 89 @ 25.28 S/R 45.2
Well the next test is at Old Trafford too and presumably he'll be back for that. Better to play test 1 and test 3, than just test 2So why drop him from his home ground test where he has a bowling average under 22? Just ridiculous.
Midway through the Pakistan series in Apr 2017that's night and day. what are the dates?
When the series might be dead? Still ridiculous.Well the next test is at Old Trafford too and presumably he'll be back for that. Better to play test 1 and test 3, than just test 2
You would would think you could trust the players to follow some pretty basic instructions though without the need for a detour and adding risk to players who are all committed to making the sacrifices necessary to get the game underway. Regardless of what the ECB could?ve done to avoid this it is completely irresponsible from Archer and downright stupid. It's (apparently) about a 60 mile detour for him to go to Hove on the way up from Southampton, so that would suggest some sort of thought had gone into it.
It's so silly though; if the ECB can afford to charter a plane to bring the Windies players and backroom staff over why couldn't they have got one from Southampton to Manchester? Or even a bus, if a plane was seen as extravagance in these austere, COVID-riven times.
Jofra's been daft, no doubt, but he's a sportsman and not a rocket scientist. One feels the powers that be could've done a wee bit more to mitigate such visits from Major Effup.
TMS reporting it's the first time a team has opted to bowl first at OT in a test since 1993.
Hopefully SCurran will make some foot holes for Bess to take advantage of in the 4th.
It’s not about pushing the bowler through the stiffness and telling him to get on with it and play. Presumably they will have thought there’s a very real chance he could get injured, leaving us with ten men and a main out of the bowling attack would have helped nobody! Not a fan of ageing bowlers like Anderson sitting out for crucial games because they bowled a lot and got sore. What's the point of prolonging a career if you can't make it when your team needs you the most?
