*Official* West Indies in Sri Lanka 2010

As always, this'll depend a lot on how many of West Indies best eleven are playing. Their best eleven is actually quite a decent team in theory but it never features and they'd comfortably have the biggest gulf between their Test team and their A team.
Batting looks pretty fine besides the absence of Sarwan. The attack looks a little short

Roach
Pascal/Russell
Sammy
Benn
Bravo

Some good raw fast bowling there but it will be in Sri Lanka and could really go either way.

Shillingford looks a much better bowler to me than Pascal and Sammy, so I'd look to play him. Ideally Sammy wouldn't play but obviously he's going to as he's captain. I've never seen Russell but I'm keen to.

The danger man in y eyes is Benn. We saw how Randiv had Indians in trouble, mainly due to bounce he was getting. Benn will get more bounce and could be very good. Only negative factor for him is the top order lefties that SL have, and one man named Samaraweera, who's excellent in playing on dust bowls.

I think the Benn bubble is bound to burst. A **** ****, IMHO.

You reckon two spinners and Bravo as the change bowler?

SL pitches and team have a habit of making average test spinners look great (Ex. Rajesh Chauhan, Daniet Vettori, Arshad Khan, Giles) and make good spinners look like trash (Ex. Kumble, Harbhajan, Mushtaq, MacGill). So you can guess in what category Benn is.

Yeah ideally (with Edwards and Taylor out) I'd play Roach, Russell, Bravo, Benn and Shillingford as the attack. Sammy's going to play though and I think him or Bravo opening the bowling is just a bit dire so Shillingford will have to miss out. I'd sooner drop Benn in all honesty but there's no real grounds to do that based on his recent performances so it won't and shouldn't happen.

Ya, two seamers, two spinners and all rounder. That will be SL's plan too. Malinga, Thushara / Fernando, Randiv, Senanayake / Herath with Mathews will be their bowling attack.

I don't like the idea of Sammy with the new ball in Sri Lankan but I guess he'll have to take it.

West Indies automatically have to pick two seam-bowling allrounders though. Bravo because he's gun and Sammy because he's captain. It messes with their balance a bit; the second spinner will probably miss out. Gayle will do a bit of bowling.

Ah did forget this, Shilly to warm the bench even though Benn is dire.

Ah, I forgot Sammy is an all rounder.

I'm pretty sure Sillyman Benn is suspended for the first test anyway so Shillingford, who I really like as a bowler will play. I agree with everyone that Sammy having to play will mess up the team balance in countries with flat pitches, but it could prove useful in seamer friendly conditions as Sammy is an under-rated bowler.

My team for the 1st test:

Gayle
Barath
Bravo (Dwayne)
Bravo (Darren)
Chanderpaul
Nash
Baugh (wk)
Sammy (c)
Russell
Shillingford
Roach

Notes:

- Very deep batting with all rounders all the way down to 9.
- Dwayne Bravo at 3 because Sammy playing reduces his bowling workload and it's time he fulfilled his batting potential.
- I would not be too upset if Thomas played instead of Baugh.
- I really can't wait to see Barath and Bravo bat together at test level as I have thought they would play test cricket when I first came across them both 6 years ago.
- It is a risky lineup given the inexperienced attack but it's certainly not the worst attack we've come up with in recent years (no Rampaul, no Powell, no Baker etc).

I'd forgotten about Benn's suspension....

So, it could boil down to a choice between Pascal and Russell, in his absence. I hope they both play in the three day warmup game tomorrow.

Benn is a parody of a test-class off-spinner, IMHO. Don't care if he takes a 5-fer occasionally while conceding 9000 runs, Still averages 1800 anyway. One of the very few players I hate due to reasons of lack of ability. The Ishant Sharma of spin bowling. Seems a dickhead too. WAC.
