No he can't...

WI 165 behind with 25.2 ovs left.

Pollock to take the new ball as soon as Kallis ruins the old one.

Smith and Hinds doing very well to defend - let's see what Pollock and Ntini can do with the cherry :)
A pity that Sarwan got out, but Dwayne Smith providing adequate compensation. They didn't take the new ball straightaway, gave Adams another over, which went for 15, courtesy of Dwayne Smith. His first test 50 off just 52 balls, I wouldn't call what he is doing defending...
New ball taken now, Ntini's got it.

True.

Blame the cricinfo commentator, he was telling me that Pollock was warming up...and look here!

82.6 Pollock to Hinds, OUT: pushing fwd off teh under edge asw he brought this one closer in requireing Hinds to play who was
looking to withdraw the bat

West Indies 296/5, Partnership of 72
WW Hinds b Pollock 25 (68b 4x4 0x6)

Maybe the start of something big?

Dwayne Smith is batting brilliantly! His timing in this innings has been sensational, hard to believe his highest FC score is only 102... he surely must be in consideration for the one day series. Graeme Smith can't set fields to him:
81st over: Adams bowls in rough outside leg, Smith lofts it to mid-wicket boundary. G. Smith puts in a deep square leg, deep midwicket, two short midwickets and a long on.
Next ball: In the rough again, Dwayne whacks it between midwicket and long on for 4.
Two balls later: charges, over long on for six.

Then there's the six off Ntini...
In reality he should have been out lbw a long time ago, but great to watch anyway. Ntini forced out of the attack after just 2 overs now...

It truly is sensational stuff from Smith - HE still believes that the West Indies can win this one.

Ridley Jacobs in with him, Vasbert Drakes and Dave Mohammed to come - all portentially big hitters. The next hour could be fun.

Where did this guy come from? A 93 ball century on test debut, only his second in FC cricket! Showed no signs of nerves as he neared his ton: played a hook, flash over slips and a cover drive all off one Nel over, all going for 4 to bring up his century.

95 needed, 11 overs remaining, 5 wickets in hand, one batsman on 101*... why is Ridley Jacobs blocking?!

Dwayne Smith currently has the highest test average ever. :P

No chance now, 88 off 48 needed, and Kirsten on for a trundle. I thought WI were a chance when they needed 97 off 12 overs - the field was aggressive, with only fine leg on the boundary, a few fours could have put SA under pressure. But apparently Jacobs doesn't have as much faith in the tail as I do, so an honourable draw will suffice.

Captains calling it off early now, with Smith unbeaten on 105 at a run a ball, his highest FC score ever. I imagine that Smith has done enough to get into the side ahead of Hinds if Chanderpaul is fit for the 4th test.

One more thing: SA need to find a new first-slip fieldsman. Pollock has been terrible in this series.

Turning into a decent bowler, isn't he?

Got an atitude problem, though.
I thought that his attitude in the game which just ended was exemplary - sure, the glassy stare and the long follow-through - that's all part of the fast bowler's armoury.

There were no 'send-offs', no verbals - what you had was a guy trying his guts out - and I commend him for that.

When the game ended and the players were chatting before the presentation, he looked to be laughing and joking with quite a few of the West Indies players - including BCL.

I think that getting his ass slapped after the first test just might have made a difference this time, though I suppose only the future will tell whether he regresses to old habits. I hope not - he could turn out to be a great bowler.

Could have said the same for Fidel Edwards!!

Nel is turning into a very fine bowler.. Allan Donald did the same, chucking his toys out of the pram when the chips were down, but when you learn to channel that agression, the end product is usually a very fine bowler..

Re: Smith... I have never been so thrilled to be so wrong in my life. :)

Brilliant innings worthy of whatever praise he gets.

The tongue came out when he dismissed Lara though. :P

I'd suggest Ganga getting the axe instead.

A notable thing, Smith is the first West Indian batsman to score a century on debut in 26 years. :wow:

that team had Chanderpaul in it. This team had Dwayne Smith.

By all means the West Indian players should go out there and play their natural game (except Smith who would end up out for his average again)
One of those predictions that you don't mind being wrong?

I guess Smith is naturally a defensive player based on that? ;)
