If Baugh plays and gets runs, I will finally acknowledge hehas some ability with the bat.
I think he played well all things considered.

This really has come down to the toss. You'd have to admit that the conditions were primed for bowling this morning and South Africa were going to do nothing but bowl first.

I am the first to admit when West Indian batsmen get themselves out for ugly and unnecessary shots, but the fact is that they didn't do so today. Full credit to South Africa.

I would have loved to see Edwards in those conditions this morning (bowling not batting:P).

So you saw the cricket then? You saw how Sarwan, Hinds and Chanderpaul all got good deliveries and Ganga got a decent one? You saw all that right?

You saw how Baugh got a line and length ball too? Of course you did.

50 for Jacobs. Brilliant innings!
"good deliveries" are no excuse for getting scuttled as they did.
They are only as good as you play them, and its typical west indies to give every good ball its due by getting out.

Lara is in that sort of mood again.

Ridley Jacobs really has to be an under-rated cricketer. Everyone talks about Gilchrist, Boucher and co, this guy is class.

Well he showed he likes to the boundaries.

4 4's in his 30 ball 21 run stint at the crease showed to get on with it.

Now Nel makes a breakthrough.

148-6. Jacobs got a good ball in his 58.

Agreed completely. He tends to get forgotten in talk about 'keepers, yet he always seems to perform when the West Indies is in trouble. He got 90odd unbeaten v Aus when the top order collapsed. He got 90odd not out v South Africa and a century in the next game. He got 50odd not out v Zimbabwe to save the game. He also averaged around 45 in the Tests during the 5-0 of 1998/99.

He's out now, but he played a fine innings and did a great job for the West Indies. Enter Drakes...

Jacobs got several good balls in his 58, but he happened to get out to one. :)

That's not true. It's typically West Indian to give bad balls more than their due by getting out.

I've always been a big fan if his , not the best footwork in the world but he's got a very good eye & isnt afraid to give it a thump , his keeping is solid & very reliable without being anything spectacular.

I remember at the WACA in 2000/01 when he made a very assertive 96 , his partnership with Wavell Hinds turned what looked like being a total catastrophe into a mild humiliation , McGrath had taken his hat trick earlier that day , I'll never forget that :D

Great recovery by the Windies. We're used to it from BCL, but fantastic stuff from Jacobs, Drakes and Sanford.

Can't agree with you on the above though, Mr M. The top 5 should have been leaving far more balls, particularly on length. I don't think it's unreasonable to have expected at least one of them to show a bit of applications and provide the Prince with some decent support.

We're back in the game now though.

As was stated above, the pitched was largely bouncy but the odd one didn't exactly bounce extraordinary. As was stated on the commentary, the West Indians looked uncomfortable against the bounce, perhapds due to our slow pitches which lack significant bounce.

The reason why Lara thrived, aside from his genius, is because he moved a fair way across his stumps to get right in behind the line.

Jacobs was great too. He thrived on playing forward as much as possible which is a good tactic on South African pitches.
