You're aware of the meaning of 'potent', right?

Gayle > any opener in NZ atm.
Lara >>>>>>>>>>> Fleming, who I presume is NZ's best batsman.
Sarwan > Vincent, Styris, Marshall, Fulton, McMillan, any other middle order batsman you want to toss in there.
Chanderpaul > Sarwan and Gayle.

That is all.
I disagree with the quote Fleming best batsman. At the moment I think it is Styris. Flemings arguably the best captain in the world and I think he is a one in four good innings player. Of course Lara's above the rest. I think your Sarwan better than all our batsman is probably not true. The problem is once you get those players out whose left to actually hit the ball? Thats one of the problems Sri Lanka have. They get their first four or five batsman out and then their are no real great batsman to whack the ball or even hit the ball. I think results for West Indies over the last few years sum them up at the moment

You're underestimating Sarwan as an ODI cricketer... massively. Of the top of my head, he averages a fair bit more than any New Zealand batsman, and for good reason. Potency was my original point, not consistency. That said, Sarwan's pretty consistent too when in form.

Why else would they have Dwayne Smith in the team? Also, Dwayne Bravo and Denesh Ramdin can bat a little.

Because the batting is potent, but inconsistent... like New Zealand's. The big difference between the West Indies and New Zealand is that New Zealand has far more consistent bowling and fielding. The West Indies ODI team has built a reputation as being good at chasing, but that won't work everytime when your bowlers are letting through 280-300 runs.

The Batting of West Indies has the potential to make good scores and bat well but only happens on rare occasions similar to Sri Lanka and NZ. I geuss thats exactly what you where saying.

I heard on Radio Sport this morning it was tomorrow, plus Richard Boock hasn't done his "this is the team I would pick" in the Herald today. For example...

"For this series against the Windies, I would drop Astle, Styris, and Fleming. Because I know better and I could pick great players from Southland's B team than the NZ Cricket selectors can. Name them, why should I?"

It'll probably be named around 3 this afternoon. Or maybe at the conclusion of today's semi final.

From Southland B, I would replace Astle, Styris and Fleming with Greg Dawson, Brett Freeman and Logan Savory.

I'd say that will confirm his place in the Black Caps. Jamie How might be the unlucky one to miss out with Fleming returning.

Boock says "What a great idea".

He told me to pass it on.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Wow, McCullum!

"BB McCullum 50 runs off 18 balls in 19 minutes"

And he was opening the batting too..

McCullum did offer Bracewell further food for thought about him opening. But can't see it happening until Astle & Fleming have finished.

Fleming will be a under a bit of pressure to perform when he returns. He's got several contenders swooping around for an opening spot, although I doubt his spot is in any jeopardy for the World Cup..it'll be good for him to be kept on his toes.

Feb 16th is the 20/20 match..and then a few days after is the first ODI in Wellington.

5 ODI's. Im predicting NZ 4/1, maybe 3/2.

Radiosport is suggesting that Ross Taylor's name will not be on the sheet when it is read out at 2pm today.

Richard Boock believes this will be the team:

Fleming
How
Astle
Vincent
Fulton
Styris
H.Marshall
McCullum
Vettori
Mills
Franklin
Bond
Patel

There's no room for Ross Taylor IMO, who would you drop?

Hamish Marshall? No, he's starting to come right and has proven his class in the past
Jamie How? No, he didn't do too badly against Sri Lanka, and has scored well in the State Shield
Nathan Astle? As I said yesterday and Boock said this morning, he'll be needed for his part-time bowling and seems to be coming right again.
Lou Vincent? No way, after his most successful year in ODI year (2005)

It's great to see though, if someone gets injured we've got some decent backup players at last!

Ewen Thompson has had his share of injuries, but if he can put a couple of seasons back to back staying injury free..he could be useful for NZ. I think he's got potential to be a 3rd or 4th change bowler for NZ and handy #9 hitter.
I think he's only 26 so it won't be too late to pick him.
