So with Blundell looking good, will he keep his place for the second test if Watling is passed fit?
I was beginning to wonder that ... if he hadn’t run out of partners and got to 100, it would have been interesting. But I think they’ll always stick with Watling if fit, despite him not being in the greatest of form for the last few seasons.

I was surprised by how good Blundell looked, I would have probably have gone with Philips myself ... but I spose Blundell has a great first class record over the past few seasons, so did deserve it.

Good lord Colin De grandhome hits a brutal ton and Wagner gets 7fer....... Kill me, Jill me now. This is like my anti test.

Please lord can someone elegant get some runs like Shai Hope. If we had to watch NZ bet for ages I'd have chosen runs for Kane not CDG.

This has an edgbaston like feel to it I feel an absolute pasting coming up.

Tbf he made it as quick as possible.

Not exactly elite players lining up to replace him is there though?

I'd rather a fun hack than some well meaning but mediocre scrub.
Hetmeyer is an aggressive batsman and quite frankly a lot better than Blackwood. Needs to work on his play against short balls at the body but he has earned this shot by scoring centuries every chance he gets while Blackwood arsed around.

Ambris scored a gazillion runs recently including 150 against NZ A so he was always going to start too.

I get that he's fine to watch but he needs to remember how to build an innings.

Not Terrible
It’s been pretty clinical so far. The West Indian attack ain’t awful but it feels like they’re an attack full of just passably test class blokes. Roach seems like he’s fallen away from being a genuine threat and has become more of an occasional one. Gabriel goes alright. Cummins is a bit meh and Holder is fine for a 4th option.

Didn’t rate Chase at all, don’t know anything about him either.

since letting go of anti-slightlydubiousplayer-itis its nice to sit back and watch someone like lord colin surprise me

he's claearly talented just a bit thick. spent a career continuously swinging hard and **** whrere the field is. glad to see him pick up a test ton.

west indies have had their chances todaytbh but what sperates them from the top two or three is other teams would have seized on the loose play today and crushed nz's batting hopes, or at least made the newbies work much harder and much earlier in the day. hopefully the windies will develop in that area. after all the moaning about holder being not quite a batsman or bowler in the past 12 months its nice to see him threatening with the ball.

CDG reminds me of Darren Sammy. There is something likeable about him I just don't particularly like watching him bat or bowl .

R.E Windies, we're just not consistent. We've proven we can beat anyone in a one-off test but we've also shown we can get absolutely pulverised. I hope that's just a development thing and we'll snap out of it.

Jason Holder is a poor tactician though and that's a problem. We have too many sessions where the opposition just completely get away and he doesn't know how to stop it.

Kudos to CdG for grabbing whatever opportunities he's had so far. Will never look the part at test level unlike Anderson or Neesham but has already made more impact than either of them in recent times.

Equally, I think what separates NZ from the top 2-3 sides is the inability to be ruthless when enjoying the upper hand. Latham Taylor and Nicholls should really have ground it out and made bigger scores though seems like Taylor's was a chancy innings. So too CDG giving it away just after getting the hundred though admittedly he was juat continuing with the approach which had worked.

Then again they're coming back to test cricket after a long while so deserve some leeway I guess.

Colin is grandest of them all...

Nice gesture by the windies to let another batsman create history....AB, Corey, etc

Surprised at this.

CDG is very classical and pleasing on the eye to watch bat. He does it quickly with an enormous bit of willow. I'll grant that big willow can be irritating to fans of a certain generation, though.

CdG 'hackness' is with his brain, not with his technique or 'optics'. He's likely to put one down a boundary rider's throat with a classic looking shot.

I'm so glad there are tailenders like Boult. Brings the fun back to the end of an innings, more reliably than someone like Southee too.

Admittedly Blundell won't get a much cruisier introduction to test cricket than this, but this has been a really solid little effort from him.

feels like it wasn't long ago in this game that the windies had a decent chance of executing some really good damage limitation

They worked hard and kept themselves in it...then just fell away once Taylor and Nicholls got going.

even during the taylor/nicholls partnership they were always in with a chance of a wicket. very unlucky with their poor no ball discipline for nicholls wicket but it was only when those two were gone that they softened up and didn't have an answer to lord colin
