*Official* Warne vs Murali Discussion

werent SL pitches flat? Kumble and harbhajan struggled. I remembering hearing that SL made the pitches flat so that only murali would be able to turn it. That was apparently the reason given for as to why SL didn’t blood any other spinners during that time. I may be wrong of course as I am younger and was not able to watch
Since we are discussing Murali, they were dust bowls suited for Murali. Of course when we discuss Sangakkara, they suddenely becomes roads.

I consider Murali and Warne very close, closer than Lara and Tendulkar. I realise in the past my personal dislike for Warne as a character influenced me to not rate him ahead. Muralis big advantage was his variety, especially with this doosra making him more dangerous for a bat fresh at the crease.

Here are my reason for rating Warne as the better spinner:

- Murali didn't succeed in Australia. It's not a small issue since pitches there would be the ultimate challenge for him. His 2007 series doesn't inspire confidence he would have done well there with more series.

- Warne was simply a more aggressive spinner than Murali. Murali was very reliant on his variations and containing the bat to eventually get him out. But once he got smacked would retreat into a shell a bit. Warne on the other hand to me had a higher chance of getting a wicket even if he was taking stick.

- Warne was a tactical genius as a bowler and his mind games added an extreme dimension to his game that Murali didnt have.

Small edge to Warne.
Murali failed in Australia and India. Warne failed in India, West Indies and in Australia against India. So I don't see how you can rate Warne on this.

Warne rarely bulldozed batting lineups like Murali. Having an aggressive body language, sledging etc doesn't make a spinner more aggressive. Infact Murali never went on to bowl on to rough as Warne to restrict scoring. He got everything off the middle of the pitch.

Warne was an extra-ordinary genius than Warne s another myth. Murali exactly knew how to play with each batsman's technique, rather than psyche. Hussey in an interview tel;ls how Murali could recall what should be bowled to each batsman, not only by him, even by pacemen. What ever the advantage Warne have here is a wafer thin one.

The two telling factors are Warne's batting and Murali's ODI feats. That decides who is the greater of the player.

meh a lot of intangibles there. I could just as easily say Murali did better in wi no? And in India. And against India. I also heard Murali did better than Warne in county cricket.

I’m pretty sure he was a better odi player and better control over his variations which makes him the greater spinner for me. I know cw does not like mixing formats but succeeding in both formats just feels like greater versatility.

But fair enough if you feel Warne was more intelligent and all that. I haven’t watched so my opinion may matter little

This is if they bowled same number of deliveries to the same oppositions in away matches. Pakistan and UAE were considered as a single entity. There are two matches where Warne plated in SL against Pakistan, that also can be included in Warne's stats. Finally it comes down to averaging averages.
