Rik: A bit harsh to label Jayasuriya as merely a slogger, don't you think? The term 'slogger' has overtones of 'fluke' when considering how many innings like last-night's Jayasuriya has played, surely he couldn't fluke it that much. :)
Perrsonally I don't think Jayasuriya is that good a player. For every innings like that, there 3 where he's out cheaply.

Personally I'd rather have a consistent player such as Knight at the top of my order.

i would rather have jayasuriya. just cos its such a spectacle when he gets going. he is a real match winner.

an absolute brilliant performance by SL after the Adelaide debacle less than 48 hours earlier - from the ridiculous to the sublime!!!!!

Their batting lineup is starting to fire and this should be sounding BIG warning bells for the Kiwis for their WC opener!!!!!!!

Thats Fine Mark, But I beg to differ for the simple reason that everytime Jayasuriya Fires his team is almost guarenteed victory.... also he is quite a capable bowler and a good fielder too.

Ok so maybe he is inconsistent, but when you class him as a slogger, you put him alongside players like Afridi and he is any day better than that guy. In test cricket against quality bowling on sporting pitches, he may be found wanting, but in one dayers, his value to his team as an explosive opener, accurate left arm spinner and good fielder is immense.

Jayasuriya, to me, is a useful player rather than an outstanding player.
He can be outstanding one day and mediocre the next. He is a player who can win you matches all on his own and also suffer extended bad patches.

Legglancer: Rik's entitled to his opinion and just because he's not a world-class batsman, doesn't mean he can't comment on others. If that were the case, no-one would ever question a doctor's diagnosis or a mechanic's price. There's no need to be so inflammatory.

He slogs the ball so he's a slogger. He doesn't exactly play the ball along the ground does he? I said he's a slogger but he's no ordinary slogger, that guy has both luck and skill on his side. Thinking about it, Afridi could be awesome if he just put his mind to it...

Well Mr. Rik .... Ain't you the brave one on the "keyboard" ? If you are that good what are you doing typing couching behind a computer ? .... instead of taking it to the pacies like shoaib, lee, macgrath ?

Last time Ive checked I havent seen your name on the record books for the fastest 50's century's or highest number of sixers not to mention the most runs in an over, such as jayasuriya. lol

LoL..... however I understand you Rik ..... sometimes Its nice to be able to dream..... you must be a true CyberWarrior.
I wasn't critisising him, I like watching Jayasuria bat, it's just that he's a slogger, a very good one, but still he slogs it.

For your information I'm a Shropshire County Cricketer, so I think your the one crouching behind your computer. I don't see you sticking it out with any of the International Players either...

Well obviously Rik, you have missed the point ! See, I never claimed, even in jest, to be able bat like Jayasuriya, or perform as well as any other international sports star. I like most normal individuals am aware of my limitations and strenghts.
You on the other hand claim to be able to bat like Jayasuriya !!!??? which is delusional and a laughable claim really, Hence the response.

As for whether he is a slogger or not is a matter of openion.

ok rik, is adam gilchrist a slogger?? is Hayden, Knight, Martyn (well younever know what hes thinking :P)

how do you define a slogger

Jayssuria slogs abit, so, everyone does, the only real sloggers in the aussie team are lee and warne :P, the only sloggers in the SRL team are Vaas and Kalu a slogger is i would say is a player taht more often than not scored by slogging, not a class bat like jayasuria

I wouldn't call Jayasuriya a slogger.

Yeah, he's an aggressive batsman, but to me a slogger implies someone who just swings the bat and hopes, like Zoysa, Afridi, or the innings played by Botham and Dilley at Headingley 81, with the runs predominantly from cow-shots over the leg side.

I thought that Brett Lee was a bit of a slogger, but my opinion on him is changing after some of the drives and cuts he played at Sydney.

Some of the square shots that Sanath plays on the off-side can never, ever be classed as slogs.

I class him as a slogger as you see the flicks off his legs and heaves into the stands? They are not normal shots. Anyway no one of the players you mentioned are sloggers, although Knight is a bit of an odd batsman in terms of where he hits the ball...

Gilchrist, Maher and Hayden play those shots alot, and even martyn was playing them today, they seem perfectly normal shots to me

England are going great guns, 64 for no loss after 14 overs needing 272 for victory.
This Aussie attack without Warne & Jason is definately weak.Their reserve bowlers aren't having a good time, i'm surprsied that Hogg is selected for WC instead of Hauritz, who looked to me like a very fine propect.

Australia Just won by 8 runs thanks to 2 exellent overs in the death by Shane Watson who picked up 2 wickets and only conceded about 9 runs.

England were 165/0 great fight back by the Aussies.

Man this was an exiting match great stuff.

anzac

another one that England let slip thru their grasp!!!!!

while it was a good effort, to finish with 3 wickets in hand & 8 runs short is criminal!!!!! They let the Aussies off the hook in each innings!

:)
